Wet / Dry Set - Up Question

Hey All.

Wondering how I should do this or what others do controlling volume. Here's my set up:
I have a David Bray Lo-1 line out box between my Marshall Superlead Head and cab. The line out goes into reverb pedal and then into the FX return of a DSL 40CR.

My question is this: Should I max the master volume on the DSL and use the Line out box to control the DSL's volume or use DSL's master volume to adjust it's volume?

I'm trying to simplify adjusting the volumes of the two amps as I am new at using this set up. Sorry if this question makes no sense. LOL

I really like this set up and I want to use it at it's full potential.

How do you guys/ girls set up your rigs? Any suggestions?

I have one of those as well; but the trick is to experiment with those volumes until you get them balanced between your dry and wet, so when you turn the dry amp up they are both increasing in volume the way you want them to. I’d set the Bray at noon, DSL up half and turn up the dry amp and see how the DSL sounds in relation to it. Too quiet? Turn the Bray up full. Too much? Back off the DSL first and try it. My Triple Recto line out is super hot so I barely have it at noon. Vs the C+ I had, that had to be maxed. You’ll get it where you want it by experimenting. I like it where the wet is equal to or a little quieter than my dry amp.

I would bring the line out box to noon and then match the DSL with the superlead then adjust reverb to unity

Coolness. Thanks. I will give that a try. It's a balancing act because I have a hard time knowing if I have enough signal feeding the reverb.

How can I tell if I'm overloading the reverb pedal with the Bray signal?
I have the level on the reverb at about 9 oclock and sounds pretty good.

It's weird because when I feed a delay with the Bray line out, the delay won't work well unless the line level is at a certain level. Sometimes the repeats are barely audible even with the delay's level up. Would that be from a too weak of a signal or to strong of a signal?

thanks again!

I have bray box going to time based pedals to stereo power amp which goes to 2 1x12 cabs for a wet/dry/wet setup. The volume from stereo power amp matches the volume from dry so I only need to adjust the volume on the marshall head.
The sound is huge. Ping ponging of delays is incredible and de-tune 5150 VH Era tone is awesome.

It will sound distorted if the signal is too hot. You’ll know…

Do any of you guys use a line mixer of some kind for your wet side?

I use the Musicom Parallelizer, its great, 3 stereo parallel loops and seperate dry signal with its own control. If you use just one fx, you can get by, for more, mixer is the way to go, especially if you use 100% wet dry cabs.

I also use Bray LO-1, works nicely, although is has a slight impact on tone, depending where the control is set. You can try it on the dry amp, crank it to max and the tone/feel changes slightly. Amp to speaker cab still is the most transparent way :) Maybe Suhr Line out box works better, but I did not try it.

Sounds killer!

what power amp do you use?

My "wet" cab (DSL 40CR) is not 100% wet. I like equal amount of dry signal coming out of each cab dry /wet, just one has the added effect(s).

Is that wrong? should the DSL bet set 100% wet? I occasionally use an EQ for solo boost also in the line out.

I definitely recommend adding a mixer to mix dry into your wet cabs. I use one of these....

Works great and not too expensive.
I second this 1000...I have one as well...great little mixer, perfect for WDW. The beauty of a mixer is it really is easier and far more intuitive -- you just run your wet fx 100% and blend in with a knob on the mixer channel.

If it sounds better to you that way then it's right, end of discussion. FWIW when I first started experimenting with WDW I didn't care for it until I starting blending dry into the wet cabs, so as to get unity volume in all three cabs.

If you set the DSL 100% wet, you're going to have to turn it down considerably or it will drown out the dry cab.

yes I want to adjust both balanced volumes simultaneously with the Superleads's master. Won't the DSL's wet volume get cut off depending where it's master volume is set? Ithough maybe dime the DSL's master but then I would have to adjust the line out and that could weaken the line level signal?

I have an HH M900 for my wet power. I have to check but I believe I have both channel volumes at noon, line out on the Triple is also noon. The Bray is used with my 72 Marshall and it’s also at noon. Works well at low/medium volumes but I may have to adjust the HH down if I were to play super loud. Ideally when you turn up the main amp, it will also increase the wet volume at the right level for you…if I turn the 72 up and the wet volume increases too much then I’ll go reduce the volume on the HH. Just have to experiment a bit. I’d start off with the Bray and DSL at noon and go from there.
