Bought a pair of new Green Berets to go on the bottom of a beater 1960A with EVH’s up top.

One direct from WGS and another off eBay from a retailer. They look and sound completely different. The one from eBay (left below) sounds awful and has a different basket. The one from WGS direct (right below) sounds phenomenal. The two speakers are not even remotely similar other than the appearance of the cones.

They are both obviously new. Same packaging (external and internal) and same magnet sticker. Anyone know WTF is going on? I’ve sent an inquiry to WGS.

no clue but i’d love to hear what you find out.
my mahalo 4x12 came loaded with

invader 50s and ET 65s in an X pattern, and since i don’t pound them with volume i think they are still breaking in—getting less toppy and more mids.

also loaded an older used Blackhawk HP into my friend’s boogie mark III greenie combo and it sounded great

Are those baskets on the invaders and ET-65’s different? Hard to tell but it looks those ET-65’s have the same basket as my “good” sounding Green Beret

not sure it this is a better look—i replaced one of the ET65s with a gh30 for a while.

Yeah. My great sounding Green Beret has the same basket of those ET65’s of yours. My shitty sounding Green Beret has the basket of those Invaders. Be interesting what WGS says.

I’m so put off by it that I just did this unless WGS wants to send me one to match the good sounding one.

I know that many years ago Weber changed suppliers and their speakers changed and not by just a little bit. I called them about it and they said "should sound the same". But they didn't.

I think that's why @Scumback Speakers fell out with Weber, because they just willy-nilly changed parts in his speakers.

Just the board for the connections and the way its mounted looks cheaper on the left Green Beret.

Are they darker sounding? I've always wanted to try one of these and the Jensen Blackbird since they are a high wattage alnico and I like alnicos. Speakers can be such a money drain, especially alnicos!

here’s a iphone clip i made tonight using a new to me prs ce custom—>mesa mark III blue stripe—> mahalo 4x12 with the invaders+et65s

the gtr sound is a little edgier and stratty but the pickups also have a boominess so i added more low cut and more top end to the graphic than normal. but the speakers, which to my ear are voiced brighter/edgier than celestions, seem to hang ok.

their website says:
“The Invader 50 is the sweeter and creamier version of our hugely popular Green Beret “

and the ET65 like a G12-65, which they suggest pairing with their veteran 30

they’re darker sounding than the Altec 417 i pulled from the combo, in a good way and was the reason i swapped them, but more celestion bitey than an EV which it’s often compared to.

Sounds like a good match for a Twin. $279 each though....not cheap.

Yeah, I found they bought whatever to fill an order, even if it wasn't what I spec'd so they could bang my Visa.

Love WGS speakers. I have a couple of sets of the ET65's in various cabs. Although they claim they're modeled after the Celestion 65's i hear a substantial difference as I have a set from 1983 to compare too. Both sound great, just different. I also have an Invader 50 in a 1x12 combo that is my favorite WGS offering. The Veteran 30's were ok but not good enough to keep. I was fortunate to buy all my WGS speakers years ago when they were very reasonably priced.

The WGS Invader is one of my favorite speakers. I have a cab loaded with one Invader, 2 ET65s and a Reaper.. sounds great. It is one of those Marshall 1960 Stereo cabs so I was testing one side against the other with the ETs on the bottom and ended up liking them all together.
