What 6L6's for Rhodes Colossus

I have been out of the 6l6 game for while. JJ's were what I used in the past. Looking for some feedback on some other manufacturers. I see there are quite a bit of options. Any input would be much appreciated. !

I've got TAD 6L6 in my Colossus. It sounds pretty dang mean.

Kyle ships them with JJs now which I'm not a big fan of. SED =C= logos are great. Also want to try some KT88s too.

I've tried a bunch of different ones from coveted NOS Sylvania to TAD to JJ and I think the JJ sound the best. They're just solid, stout tubes with a good mid-range grind and low-end thump. A bit darker in the highs like every JJ tube, but that's not a bad thing for me. Lets you push the presence and treble a bit more in the amp and my guitars are pretty bright as is.

My Ares came with JJ 6l6s in it. Haven't gotten too hurried about swapping them because the amp sounds amazing as is. Definitely would like to try some flavor of KT88 in there, some Gold lion Kt77s and possibly some TAD EL34s just for fun.

Im certainly not disappointed in the tone with the JJ's. I think these are the original JJ's from the 2013 build. Im sure adding any fresh tube I will be able to hear a difference!

I did throw some EL34's in it when I first got it. It didn't sound bad I just have El34's in every other amp i own!

We all have our favs. For me the JJs sound dark, muffled, and kill off too much high end harmonics... they take all the fun out of tube amps for me. I hate their preamp tubes as well. Yes... they are reliable... but they sound too dark, muddy, muffled imho.

Lots of other things in the signal chain to take into account. In the grand scheme of things, tubes don't make a huge difference, I've found. All this talk of deeper lows or more grind or muffled this or that is all really very subtle. I've found combinations of tubes that work well in my amps. But at the end of the day, I could throw in any properly functioning tube and it would probably sound about the same.

So true. 90% of the huge tone change we "hear" from power tubes, especially at lower volumes, is simply psychoacoustics.
