Peavey Triple X head. 6L6 or EL34?

I'd pick one up in a heartbeat if I found one cheap. People are really jacking the prices up, and nobody wants to ship them because they're heavy AF.

I love both the JSX and Triple XXX. The JSX is still one of my all-time favorite amps.
The lack of Resonance and Presence is the main thing that I wish it had. Damping on loose has the best bass, but it also makes the high end more harsh.

Funny enough, I also have a Gflex 212, and that is a great cab with this amp since it is dark. My cab with V30s / T75s are much harsher with it.

You could luck out with finding the right tubes. Maybe. You're better off modding the amp to get the lows and highs right. By modding, I mean changing or adding some caps in key places. The jsx fat switch adjusts a coupling cap value early in the circuit. The xxx does it automatically when changing channels. Smaller cap, tighter bass.

To tame the gain, replace the gain pot. XXX has 1M on both channels. Other amps in the series have 50K on the crunch.

There was a MINT G-Flex 4x12 on FB Marketplace a few weeks ago for like $400. I was SO tempted to grab it, but I just couldn't justify the need for it. Seller was right up the road too.
I'm talking to a guy about the El Diablo head and cab for $560. I don't really have any interest in the head. I tried one out a couple of times in the local music store, and as far as I remember, it was trash, but I could just flip the head.

There's a GFlex half stack for sale locally here for $1000 CAD ($700 USD) and he's willing to split them up so could probably get the cab for $400 CAD ($285 USD) but I've already got 7 412s...

Those heads are garbage.

Tubes for my Peavey Triple X head.

Power section: 6L6 or EL34 and why? I'd appreciate your input and insight. I'm leaning toward EL34's to be punchier and add grind while taming the fizz and the low end.

Preamp section: If you've tried lower gain tubes in the preamp, which tubes did you go with, what slots did you put them in (V1,V2, etc) and how did they affect gain and tone?

Thank you!
What setup did you decide and why? And how do you like it?

JJ KT77's are the way to go. I go with a Tungsol in V1, a 5751 in V2, (I use good NOS JAN GE), JJ ECC83S in V3, and a Sovtek 12AX7LPS in V4.

I went with EL34's and I also got a couple of 12AT7's to play with the gain structure. Haven't installed them yet. The amp was never serviced as far as I can tell and it's got issues. I think my Triple X is one of the earliest ones with the 100 ohm screen resistors. I want to replace those with 1K 5-Watt. I also read the some of the diodes are cheap, so I'll probably change those as well. I decided I needed to learn to work on my amps. I'll be asking questions before I do, as I don't want to take myself out by touching the wrong thing inside the amp. LOL

I couldn't even tell you what tubes are in mine but the other guitar player and singer in the coverband swear these speakers make a big difference.

Just 2 stock Genz-Benz 2x12. Other guitarist has been using his Triple XXX with a Engl 4x12 and thinks mine sounds better and thinks these cabs are the difference.
