We opened for them about 10 years ago. I think he was using Randall MTS stuff. I think he had good tone

Came here to say this. We opened for them around the same time.

His tone was FAT and slayed out front with that rig. They were LOUD in a medium sized bar..and Ty's sound was truly great. He could sound great through just about anything though.

Side note: Dug was the nicest guy. Even asked for a CD. Such a sweetheart.

Whatever Mick Mars was using back in the day. Thick tone is an understatement, regardless of what you think of his playing and Crue as a whole, I still think that's pretty much the live benchmark in my head.

Can't decide. Either EVHs w/d/w 5150 rig on the Balance tour (I love stereo pitch detune ever since I heard that live), Joe Holmes Marshalls with Ozzy or Mick Mars monster Soldano and Marshall rig with the Crue.

Did he have the Soldano in his rig during the Feelgood tour? I remember his live tone from that time particularly sticking out in my head.

Ya he is. He sat and had a beer with us after soundcheck. Said he hated beer but it wasn't bad in Canada lol. Said it actually had flavour.

Akira Takasaki in NYC with Stryper and TNT. 3 full Boogie stacks of Mark III's. His solo spot was massive! Next day my Marshall went up for sale..

I'm going to say UFO/Schenker 1996 Keystone Palo Alto. Opened up with Natural Thing then into Mother Mary....it was exactly like the Stranger In The Night tone. Killer. That amp was a 2205/2210 Marshall. Close second was George Lynch on the Under Lock and Key tour outdoors at Cal Expo Sacramento opening for Priest 1986. What a great show.I believe that was the Aspen Pitman plexi? Of course Holdsworth on the Road Games tour at Yoshi's was unforgettable too. I think Holdsworth was using the Hartley Thompson amp back then, but I think he had a modded Marshall in his rig too. Not sure on that though.

I'm not sure. I saw them a few times but much later, all in the 2000s with something along the lines of this insanity....

Haven't read the whole thread, but I will say "rarely has it been the amp that's delivered the best live tone, it's always been the player".

Just IMHO, YMMV.

  Agree that it's usually the case, but man, I've been to some shows over the years and watched monster players that sounded like ass...

EVH 5150 Tour
Joe Holmes with Ozzy.
Dudes mention Joe Holmes, Mick Mars...common denominator is a true Jose Arredondo Marshall. Check out John Sykes "Bad Boy Live" for an example..intro to Cold Sweat..

Tool on the Lateralus tour and AIC on the most tours. Big fan of Petrucci's latest sound too.

Neil Zaza with a telecaster into a Wizard amp.

So this in a small club and it has stuck with me ever since.

I want to say Doug Aldrich with Dio 2003 at Jones Beach N.J. with Deep Purple and the Scorpions ( always loved the Scorps tone!),Doug had three Marshall stacks behind him no idea what they were but the guitar tone and sound was really one of the best I've heard live, monsterous Marshall tone with clarity, really sticks in my head to this day, I also adore Lynyrd Skynyrd tone, Steve Gaines, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, and Ed King playing old Peavey Maces, all great musicians and tone Kings as far as I am concerned. And to finish off my examples of great guitar tones (clean to slightly distorted or overdriven), Mark Knofler at the Palace in N.Y. he had a couple of the Red Comet amps.

I'll also say Tool with the Jonez Toanz VH4+Marshall. Sounded great live. Cantrell sounds great but I just kinda remember the volume and his riffing; the guitar tones weren't that memorable.
