What amp should I buy?

I am in a gigging 80's metal band. I currently use a JCM205h into a Marshall 1960ahw cab and it sounds great at practice and its ease of use is great at gigs. However imo it falls a little short in recording and in overall sounds. I have recently played a Splawn Quickrod and Nitro and the Quickrod was absolutely awesome, but the price is rather steep over here £1700!

I am in two minds now. I love the sound of cranked Superleads and when I owned my superbass it was one of my best tones, albeit it was a pain in the ass to use at short gigs. And I would love to try out all the stuff people are doing (slaving, variacs, simple mods) thanks to the Metro forum clips.

The options are get a early 70's JMP a hotplate and either load it down or mod it and use that for recording and bigger gigs. Or order a quickrod from USA or used and sell the JVM?

What would you recommend?

Tony

Well, I'd probably reccomend a JVM. You can rent/borrow amps from friends and such for recording. The Splawn is an awesome amp. :)

The QR can be had pretty cheap used. I've seen them for like $1100 or so.

Get a JMP 50w Master Volume.

They can be had cheap, and they sound awesome with a boost. I'll make a vid tonight of mine with my OCD, I'll play some Ozzy, Dokken etc.

Only problem is I am in the UK so shipping is an issue.

I would look at the things that are cheap in UK.

Marshall (DSL, JMP, ...)
Cornford (there is a Mk50 on the bay atm)
Orange
Blackstar
...

Why buy a US amp for $$$ while good stuff can be had locally?

Can the Cornford do old maiden, van halen type tones? I have assumed hey are very smooth amps?

I think he ment he plays a JVM 205 now didn't he.

I understood that. But I was saying that I think the JVM would suit 80s hair metal well anyway.

You could go in the used market for a Diezel Einstein, amazing head. Other alternative would be the Cornford MKII or the Elmwood Modena...

All amazing amps, a little over your price range

Those are high high quality amps and can do 80's rock metal in spades.

You should just buy something that is made in Europe for sure. It makes no sense to buy the Splawn while living in the UK.

Hey Tony,
Go for the 70's JMP and contact RT member "MrDan666" aka Dan Gower for a mod. He's located just outside of London.
Cheers,
Mike

If not an amp and mod by Dan Gower, I just have to pipe in and say that the Cornford line up can KILL IT for 80's metal...and they're soooooooo sweet for a lot of other tones to boot.

Peace,
V.

Another totally pointless vid (need a PROPER mic/cam, or just turn the amp down!)..... BUT, it gives you a wee idea of how "heavy" the JMP can be. This is recorded with a semi acoustic(!), so imagine what it'd be like with a solid body, and a bitof EQ on the lead parts.

Turn your volume way down
