What are some budget high-gain metal amps?

I'm looking for something with a thick distortion for typical death metal (Cannibal Corpse, Suffocation, etc) for around 600-1000 USD, preferably staying closer towards 600. I only need a lead channel, so the cleans and other channels don't matter. I'm going to grab a standard 5150 or Dual Rectifier if I can't find anything else, but I would like to find something more interesting.

These should be amps you already know of, but:

VH140C - Dying Fetus
GX130C - CC
Peavey Supreme 160 - AtG
8100 - Death

Check out an Engl Thunder 50 Watt head.

Or maybe a jmp-1 pre and cheap pwr amp?

I'm currently playing the VH140C, but I can't seem to get the tones I'm searching for, and the GX130C is it's clone. I want to find a budget tube amplifier instead of another solid state, unless I find something that blows me away. I need to find a boost that suits the Ampeg if I decide to keep it.

I've been waiting to see a local Marshall VS for awhile. I plan to grab one if they ever pop up.

A Peavey 5150 used will cost you between $350 and $600 so you could also put an EQ in the loop for a different flavor. For the money, they CAN'T be beat.
Yep

Quoted for truth.

Depending on the flavor you want:
Mark iii
Tremoverb plus boost (rectos typically aren't picky with boosts)
5150
Ultra plus
DSL 100

But really, I would typically answer vh140c in this situation, for death metal.

cannibal corpse uses dual rectos. there is one on GC website for 769 dollars. seems like a pretty good deal

Mesa Boogie DC-5 head

I'm actually thinking about selling mine.

I've owned a 5150 and 6505+, but I'm looking for something outside of the normal suggestions. I currently play an Ampeg VH140C for death metal, but it's lacking something.

I thought Pat used Triple Rectos with a Keeley modded MT-2, but either way, that's a good deal on a dual.

What speakers are you using with the VH140C? They love vintage 30's.

Other amps I would consider would be (in no order)

XXX
DSL
5150/5152
Peavey Ultra/+
Mark III

What about that Line6 amp that rareguitar (Brad) was spewing about not that long ago..?? I may be out of whack mentioning it, but it's my suggestion for the sake of this thread and thought, why not??

Peace,
V.
