What are the good Marshall 412 Cabs?

I've never owned a rear loaded cab. No MDF. I want something that resonates.

The English cabs have been built the same way since the early '70s with chip-board backs and the rest birch ply. I wanna say '71 was the last year of birch backs. Some of the newer ones like the Mode Four cabs are all ply. Just avoid the Valvestate etc cabs to avoid MDF.

The Mode Four is the only newer Marshall Cab with the ply back that I know of (don't know about the reissues etc). They were a little larger than the standard 1960, but they don't make them anymore. I have a few Mojo 4x12s which are made to the older Marshall specs when they were all ply and had metal handles.

You can't go wrong with any 1960 cab. Just put in the speakers of your choice and you are good to go!

This. I have an MF 280, sounds great. You'd have to go early 70s vintage to get the same specs as the MF cabs. Unless the HW cabs have ply? Not sure..but the 1960a/b do not.

The HWs do have ply backs.

IMO, the chipboard back really helps the Marshall cabs and is there by design, not for cost cutting measures. I bought a cab for cheap with a busted rear baffle and i replaced it with a plywood baffle. I never liked that cab. Something seems looser and not as focused about it. That could be something else with the cab, but that is my experience.

And i like the G12T-75's when they are at volume.

Thanks fellas. MDF is good for hifi cuz its dead and doesnt resonate, plus its heavy as fuck. I have an 86' Randall cab in MDF, and its an anchor..

I have a JCM800 1960A cab loaded with G12-T75s and had a JCM900 1960B cab loaded with Vintage 30's

They were both fantastic in build quality and sound

Cant go wrong with a Older 1960 cab :D

I love the 1960AX cabs with the Greenbacks! Had one but my back told me that was enough.

Heavy is an understatement :) That's why I keep them in one place. No back breaking for me!

That link is goofy . They keep saying that Marshall cabs had MDF backs. Marshall had never used MDF on a 1960 cab. The back baffles are/were chipboard. Completely different product

Some of the very cheap Marshall cabs used MDF. But the 1960 has never been MDF, which is different from chip board/particle board. The 1960 has been made the same way since maybe 1972. Before then, the back was ply wood. Since then, it's chip board.

MDF is very different. It's much more dense, and the general consensus seems to be that it's too "dead" acoustically to make a great guitar or bass cab. It seems like some level of "flex" is desirable. You can tinker with it a bit yourself: with a 1960, you can see how the tone/feel changes depending on whether you screw the back board into the center post. You'll actually find some folks that prefer the chip board back to ply wood because they like the "looser" feel and tone from the more flexible back.

I've been looking on CL. What's the market value for a 1960? Some of these jokers think they have gold.. Help me troll them.

I wouldn't pay $100 for this POS..

Missing logo, chipped, torn, modded for the worse.

THis must be a reissue. Doesn't even have period correct speakers.
