What are you using for a volume boost in the loop?

The problem I always have when using a boost in the loop is that the volume is too sensitive. Very hard to dial in the right volume because if I move the volume / level just a hair too much, its way off. That goes for using the Boss GE-7 as well.
 
I would use a Boss eq, set eq flat and drop the level for a rhythm level, then solos are the normal amp tone and level.
