My favorites right now are Scumback M75s and Eminence P50Es.

Classic greenback tones with the Scumbacks. Incredibly complex midrange, with a nice creamy top end. Decent bass response. These are the speakers that make every amp I play immediately more desirable. They do anything very well, and though extreme metal may not have been in mind when designed, I wouldn't hesitate to use them for just that. Not that this is anything new to Rig Talk, what with Scumback having its own section. ;)

The P50Es I just got to play through the other day for the first time. My jaw dropped when I heard the depth these possess! I can't get away how good they sound for heavier stuff; the low midrange growl paired with the aggressive top end and solid bass make these the ULTIMATE metal speaker for me! I'll be looking for a quad shortly....

Honorable mention to Mesa V30s. I loaded a quad in one of my Bogner 4x12s and compared to the Scumbacks sitting in my other Bogner 4x12, they're not as bold or up front, but have a lower voicing that's really cool! They are a little flatter and don't have as nice a top end, but they're still excellent speakers. These are opposed to most other V30s I've heard and can't stand (I've put them against older, more broken in standard V30s and am convinced they're simply built differently).

Since hearing the P50Es the other day and being reminded of exactly how much your tone is affected by the speakers, I thought I'd pose the question to RT: What are your favorite speakers?

I thought everybody used EVM 12Ls? Are there other speakers? (Scums are cool too  ))

i really like the splawn small blocks. its a G12M copy with higher wattage rating and voiced to scott's specifications.

i really want to try the p50e's, i really like V30's for the way they sit as a speaker in mix but not enough to own them or deal with the china/america/uk BS.

i also really like sheffield 1200's for tuning amplifiers. if i can get something to sound good through them, then it will sound great through anything else

I've Demo'd Greenbacks, 75's, 65's, Heritages, EV12L's, Sheffield 1290s and 1200's, Jensen P12's and J12's, Webers, Yamahas, Eminence Patriots and Red Coats, and after all that I keep coming back To Celestion Vintage 30's.

I can't help it. I was hooked the first time I slapped V30's into my cab.

Looks like it's possible to order direct from Mesa on their site. $129 + shipping per speaker. FYI!

wow didnt know that, cool

now to decide whether i want to try p50e's or get V30s

It really depends on the amp, all my amps are pretty different. I will say my Mesa halfback cab with 2 MC90's and 2 EVM-12L's sounds good to great with all my amps. In general I am a big fan of Celestion Classic Lead 80's.

I have a Scumback Scumico and H75 and like them, but the treble is just a bit too smooth, I am missing the chime I got from my Celestion anni G12h30's, even though sometimes the treble was a bit harsh with those speakers. Amp is a '66 Vox AC50, BTW. I may be going to back to the G12h30's and use the scumbacks on another amp.

Was at Jimmys place 2 day ago with all of his cabs and speakers cranking the shit out of them (Thx Jim). I loved the mix of M75 an J75s. Just PERFECT, so much so Jim is loading my cab with them now!

I have a quad of J75LHDCs (65 watters) and I'm on the fence. I've had them for a few months, but I don't think they're quite broken in yet so I'm really hoping they'll settle down a bit.

V30s for me. I try different speakers as much as I can but i keep going back to the V30s. Im convinced that is the sound for me now. In the future though, Ill be buying WGS veterns or the Weber 12V. Never heard the Weber. Ive played the Vetern 30s before and liked them. I just dont want to buy from celestion anymore. Id rather support small business.

Pete,

All J75s will be bassy. Neento mix in the M75s for the cut.

I might add that my pick of P50E's are subjective, it really depends on the cab they're loaded in and the fryette fatbottom is my ideal cab. in oversized and rear loaded cabs ie Mesa recto I love the V30, in smaller cabs the g12k100 is great. I'm really not a fan of C90's, CL80's and especially G12T75's. Don't have the experience to comment on much else

Rola G12-80, G12-65, Greenback, Hellatone 60L. In that order.

Its all about midrange !

Yea, I don't see it. I don't think they have too much bass. They have noticeably less than H30 Heritage, G12t-75s, etc. I don't have a problem with the bass/lows. But they have more treble than most speakers I've tried and I'm not a fan of the grinding mids (for lack of a better term). As I mentioned before I'm just hoping their not fully broken in yet.

X Pattern them... Lots of Fryette/VHT cab users have done this with apparently, outstanding results

Personally I'm stoked to hear what a 4x12 loaded with P50E's sounds like

I'm kinda growing a bit tired of the V30 spiral... :aww:

Very true - this was going to be my first response... I mean, hands down the finest and sweetest sounding driver I have are the Celestion Gold Alnicos in my boutique combos, and there's nothing sweeter.
V30's, middy and icepicky and all, sound second to NONE in my Bogner 4x12 20thA cab - they RULE!!
G12K100's in the right application are good - they're linear in response, which is handy in varied volume scenarios (but they are f'n dynamite at louder levels ;) )
I liked the feel of the GT75's, but whoa, different cabs and apps and they changed a lot.
G12H30 70th Anni - fine, fine speaker!!!!!!
Eminence, haven't had much luck with the few I've used, but then again, it's only been a few.
