This exactly. V30's are actually dark to me (in that they lack presence). Bright to me is the Classic Lead 80 or the G12H Anniversary. In fact, I'm surprised so many people prefer the G12H30........its one of the brightest, grittiest, cocked wah, tubby-sounding speakers I've ever heard. It can sound good with some amps, but sounds like shit with about 95% of them IMO. Many people will chime in and challenge this but I will have no part of it. I have tried them numerous times......new ones, old ones, Hellatone ones.....they all get on my nerves really fast.

The Retro 30 is MUCH tighter than the V30 across all frequencies. It kind of reminds me of the "VHT/Fryette" of speakers. They have a dry, crunchy sound to them. Whereas the Vintage 30's are "wetter" sounding and a bit more 3-D. But for personal reasons, I prefer the tight/focused sound of the Retro 30's. I've even paired up a Vintage 30 and a Retro 30 in a 2x12 and it sounded REALLY good. In fact, I might go that direction again soon. The Veteran 30 on the other hand, I'm not such a big fan of with high gain. Its really dark and loose and the midrange is kind of blurry. I currently have one in my Vox AC15 right now but I don't know if it will stay very long.

Maybe I just like Bright speakers, cause I like the CL80's and G12H30 anni's. Both have more highs than a Vintage 30, I agree. I think my Vox Ac50 normal channel is so dark, that is why I like the G12H30's annis with it, they bring back the chime. I don't really hear the cock-wah thing though. I run my G12H30's in an opened back cab, tried them in my closed back 212 once and they were way too bassy.

I like a wide variety of speakers, but my favorite is probably the Heritage G12M. I love the crunch.

Thanks Jim. I'm definitely not to 40 hours yet. I've been running various pre-recorded guitar parts on a loop through the cab. But I've been doing it at very loud volumes and I can only take so much at one time.
You're welcome. That's why I have a soundproof room for the variac and those two 4x12 ISO cabs I break-in speakers at. It's annoying as f**k, ain't it? ;)

At least you'll be done after 50 hours, I gotta do this pretty much everyday now. Over 75% of my orders are now including the FBI service. My cab guy was over yesterday picking up supplies, and I told him "You need to build me another one of these, please."

It's bad enough I have a wall of 4x12's for demos, now I'll have a 3 4x12's for FBI lined up in a row, too.

Depending on the amp it's a three way tie between EVM12Ls, Mesa V30s, and P50Es.

mesa mc-90, et-65's. also greenbacks and v30's get an honarble mention

1) WGS Retro 30's
2) UK Vintage 30's
3) Hellatone 60/L

I've used or tried just about everything out there and I keep coming back to these in this order. It would really take something phenomenal to displace the Retro 30's in my Orange 2x12. They really are the perfect V30-ish speaker IMO.

I have 2 Hellatone 60/L's in my 2x12 right now. Can you compare them to the Retro 30's in terms of how they sound? If the Retro 30's are more articulate that would be great. How do the Retro 30's compare to the 60/L's for bass/mids/highs?

Everyone compares the P50E to a V30, but I really don't think they have the same character at all. I've played them side by side with V30s, and they stick out like a sore thumb to me. They're a lot more hollow sounding. The P50E is PERFECT with the Freyette amps, but I would not play it with much else.

To me, the 60/L's are bit too far off from the V30 voice. They remind me more of a Classic Lead 80 with a less "metallic" high end. I have never used the Mesa C90's, but I would guess they are similar to those. The Retro 30's have a much crunchier midrange than the 60/L's and are tighter in all the frequencies. They have less low end than the 60/L but its more focused. They have more perceived "brightness" to them but they don't have the extreme presence that most Celestions have, so you don't really get any "ice-pick" on top...........does that make sense ???

P50s make great toilet training tools for tiny toddlers !

Great. Thanks! More tightness is what I've been looking for along with a little less harshness. I'm ok with giving up some bottom end if everything becomes more articulated. I ordered a pair and will try them out.

C'mon, tell us how you really feel...

I take it you really love P50E's??

Well, I can't go back now as my 4x12 Deliverance is en route loaded with P50E's. I am glad to know they sound great with Fryette amps because that's the poweramp that'll be juicing this puppy. Variac approach might be needed as I want them to hit hard when I start using them right off the bat!!

V. :D

My band ends up providing our cabs as backline at a lot of tour shows and thus a lot of people have used my cab. it sounds fantastic with anything that has some sizzle to it, 5150's, recto's, an SLO100 and a 5153 come to mind but in other cases it has sounded like ass, with just about any marshall that it's been matched with and a splawn.
I think it has a similar midrange character to a greenback, but with bigger, tighter lows and more power handling and I've never used them in anything but a fryette cab so I can't comment on them objectively. My opinion of the P50E is based on my experience from the fryette cabs so i can't say how they would work in anything else, I can't imagine them working well in a rear loaded cab, the just don't have enough top end.

edit: I once toured with a band that was using a MKIV & MKV and they sounded amazingly good through my fatbottom cab

wow, no gray area with the p50e's. Theyre awesome and they suck....hmmm....

p50e's are cool but very different from V30's and Greenbacks. I also dont know why people say they sound like them, In any case they have there own thing going on and I have compared them side by side to the other speakers mentioned...... The p50e's are tighter, cleaner and somewhat scooped in the midrange. I like them but prefer v30's in most situations.
