What do I need more? (pedals)

GAS thread beware. I am looking for a pedal to give me a different EQ curve than a tube screamer for recording/mixing purposes. I currently have a Maxon OD808 as my main tone boost. I love it and I'm never getting rid of it. What I am looking for is something to give me a different EQ curve that will blend nicely with it. The OCD has been on my list for this purpose for a while, but the Blues Driver is much cheaper and at least in my head, they perform similar functions.

To compliment the TS, I am looking for something that is low gain with lots of clean boost, full bass and somewhat lax midrange (at least compared to a TS). L-l-l-lay it on me doods.

Most 'overdrives' have a bit of a mid hump and a they generally have a cut bottom end to keep the 'overdrive' from farting/fuzzing out the bottom end.

Most 'distortions' have a scooped midrange and more bottom end, but can be used as an overdrive with their gain rolled off.

So...

Boss DS-1
ProCo Rat
MXR Distortion +
MXR Distortion III
MXR Wylde OD
Fulltone OCD

There's a lot more... those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

And, if you're looking for something that has a slightly different flavour than the Tubescreamer, check out the Boss SD-1.

I own the DS-1 and an SD-1. The DS-1 overdrives the input on my amp even with gain on zero, so that is unusable for the purposes that I need it for. It is however the general tonality that I am looking for. The SD-1 has a huge low end cutand far too much fizz, so I may use it as a solo boost or something, but not as a rhythm boost.

Have you tried a Micro Amp?

Edit: Nevermind... if you're looking for the tonality of the DS-1 this is not up your alley. I'd probably lean towards the OCD... that's how I used to use it... as a rhythm boost it was great.

I use a Cool Cat Trans OD or Drive. One is a Tim clone and the other an OCD clone. Both work for boosting without that TS mid hump. I also have a Micro Amp and a MXR 10 band. Either one of those would work as well.

I'm on the same quest. My main overdrive is the Maxon OD9. I recently ordered an OD9+ for a different tone. I am really looking forward to trying out the Xotic BB MB (mid boost) preamp. This one might be what your looking for also, it has an added mid boost control.

This is actually something that I am considering for use as a solo boost because of the mid boost

I won't be saving you any money in this recommendation, but here's what I'd buy if I were you:
1 x OCD
1 x BB Preamp
1 x Creation Audio Labs Mk.4.23 Boost

Yep - all three. And you'll never have ANY problems with "seeking different EQ's" and tonal textures from these bad boys all lined up and blended into your current rig.

Peace,
V.

Yeah if you're looking for the tone of an OCD on the cheap check out the dano cool cat drive.

What do you need more of? COWBELL!!

I run these three in series: Tube Screamer-->BOSS SD-1 Super Overdriver-->BOSS Drive Zone

If I didn't have the Drive Zone it would be a Blues Driver in that slot. The Blues Driver is a bit bright, but can be tamed. I find that the best tones come from running the TS and the SD-1 together with the TS set high (which in reality adds more compression than gain, but in a groovy way) and with the SD-1 set with the gain low and output to taste, much like the clean boost many are talking about. Great tones to be had, especially run into my Marshall 1974X.

So it's either TS+SD-1 or TS+Drive Zone set to BD-2. (Man, I wish that Drive Zone was MIDI-controllable--that would be the dog's knob!).

Cheers,

OCD and a BB Pre are at the top of my list to get.

They're the biz... I've tested a Mk.4:23 Boost and I am blown AWAY with it... DEAD quiet. 24dB of headroom. Quality build. And doesn't do JACK to the original tone. Very, very impressive. I just ordered one for myself today - not cheap - but my buddy Tim (ttosh) just told me it's significantly cheaper than the KokoBoost. FWIW.

Will report back once I get this into the mix for real. I think you can order them direct from Creation Audio Labs for $170 (the Mk.4:23 that is...).

As for the BB Pre and the OCD - the best. I typically rely on my amp's natural distortion and gain stage for the grunt, but on the cleans and even the dirty channels, these are like a whole new set of channels on the amp... And they have a very 'alive' nature to them. Not like, um, ahem....BOSS products (no offence, but the new stuff is just bunk in my opinion).

Peace,
V.

OCD is exactly what you described. Low gain, all low end remains intact for a full, bassy sound, and a lax midrange.
The BB is one of my fav pedals ever, but it has mids no matter how you set it. I'd choose the OCD if I were in your situation.

I use an Xotic BB+. It's 2 pedals in one: (1) a BB Preamp with a single tone control that basically does everything the stock BB Preamp does; and (2) a clean boost with three tone controls (bass, mids and treble). I use the clean boost to boost rhythms and the regular BB side to boost my leads. You can also run both sides in series in either direction; you select the direction using a small switch on the pedal. Great pedal! Check it out!

you're pissing in the wind! :gethim:

you want a new amp, but hoping you'll cure your gas with the cheaper fix of a pedal!

save your money!

Actually it's not a tone chase sort of thing, it's more of a mixing tool. i.e. I'd use it regardless of what amp it's going in front of. I think I've decided on the OCD so I'll have that be boosting my L channel track while the OD808 boosts the R channel track and I'll use either a SD-1 or BB Preamp for center panned solo tracks. It helps to give good stereo separation and keep the parts from stepping on eachother without having to post-EQ.

I do still want that Mark V though

This sounds like a tasty mix. Clips when you're sorted, please.

And for ANYONE who's even the slightest bit interested, do yerseff a favor and check out the CAL Mk.4:23 I was like "boost, schmoost", then I played it  oh yeah, it is supreme. I am pretty impressed, and c'mon, this is a BOOST pedal, not a TALENT pedal
