What do you boost with?

I've loved my OD808 for tightening up distortion while adding saturation...

I just learned that a Dyna Comp will do it too...and add a ton of sustain...with a tad more noise.

Thoughts?

Are you looking for opinions on using the comp as a boost, or do you want to know what we use?

Sorry
What YOU use...

I had just never heard of using a compressor to "boost" with...

I guess both...? Are there any issues with using a comp as a boost??

OD808 baby

Although before I got it I have been known to use an EQ pedal as a boost. I've also used a fuzz as a boost. I'd use a compressor as a boost if I had one. I'm not one for lowering the Level knobs on pedals. Depending on the placement in the circuit, it just adds noise and decreases headroom. Anything that has gain stages could be used as a boost.

I use a Danelectro Transparent Overdrive which is a Timmy clone.

Dont Color the sound or tone.....just makes it MORE.....
Great pedal thats really cheap! ;)

I've used:

BBE Green Screamer - Decent pedal, not as flexible as the Bad Monkey, but sounds good with the right amp and doesn't have as pronounced of a mid-spike.
Boss DS-1 - Keep the Gain low and the Tone below noon and you're good to go. Possibly the most widely-misused dirt box in the world. Overall tonal response is relatively flat (no mid boost), but still can tighten up a signal.
Boss GE-7 - Sucks in FX loops, works great in front of an amp. Hella-noisy, though. Far and away the most flexible boost option I've used and is 100% clean so you don't have to tap-dance if you're switching to a clean sound.
Boss OS-2 - The Color knob makes is flexible, but it's kind of harsh as a straight-up OD. Sounds great when the Distortion and OD are mixed in front of a clean amp.
Digitech Bad Monkey - Low and High knobs are a very nice feature. Sounds over-compressed with the Gain too high, but sounds great with the gain at zero. Not a lot of output for boosting.

Nothing wrong with using a compressor as a boost. They work very well if that's the type of tone you're going after. I personally use a custom made Bodenhamer Bloody Murder (1 of 2, mine being #1). It's basically a tubescreamer with most every bell and whistle you can think of without being overly large for a pedalboard. I also have a Coldcraft Compressor (BYOC compressor) that works very nice.

If you like the OD808 I suggest two pedals.
1. GFS Greenie $60 bucks shipped
2. MXR Classic OD M-66 $30 bucks shipped

Oh yeah if you're using EMGs The MXR Zakk OD is sweet too.

Never thought of using a compressor tho

Tubescreamer based

TS-7 808 modded
SD-1 modded and stock
Bad Monkey
Green Screamer

Other

Dano TOD
Dano Drive
DOD YJM308
Metal Zone
CS-3
EQ's

Barber LTD. It's the only OD that I've kept for boosting purposes. Very clear, open midrange. There's something about it that will actually tighten up a loose overdriven amp.

do you know WHAT is changed about those pedals, i have always wondered what mods hes applying.

Suhr Koko Boost currently, two good boosts one with a nice mid hump and built in buffer if you desire to use it otherwise it is true bypass. Does a great job of being transparent from what I can tell on the clean side, then the mid boost does just what i want out of a mid boost.

I know exactly what he's doing, partly because I helped design it and partly because I helped him out when he first started his business. I was going to basically build this pedal myself, but I decided I was too lazy and wanted to throw him some extra money as he was in a bit of a slump at the time. Mine can switch in/out various diodes ranging from the Chaos diode set, 1N4001s, LEDs, stock TS diodes (I forget if they're the original ones or the 1N914s everyone uses today), etc. You can also switch between various sized resistors and caps to make it more aggressive or vintage sounding/fatter or original mid hump. There are a few other tricks in there that I don't want to give away, but yeah, I know exactly what's going on in the pedal. Search the internet and play around with various mods; it's how we all learn to modify pedals now-a-days.

Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic

Green channel (clean boost) Vol maxed gain @ 9:00
Red Channel (Lead/Gain Boost) Vol Maxed gain @ 10:00, adds a little more volume, gain and sustain
