What do you do when pickup holes are stripped?

So now this is the 2nd time I have been burned by buying pickups on the forums,

an unscrupulous seller strips the holes in the pickups they are selling, and sells premium custom pickups, I buy them, and when I go to install them, I find I am unable to mount them, because the screw holes are stripped, and do not hold the screws.

has happened to me 2 times now, getting quite annoyed at the the blatant thievery here, but is there a way to salvage the pickups so they can be used once one or 2 of the mounting holes becomes stripped?
:gethim:

I always just use some machine screws with nuts to hold them in on the bottom side.

doesn't that make it a little difficult to adjust to the proper level though?

If you're really ambitious you can glue or solder the machine screw nuts to the tab, or you can also use a retaining clip. If you can't find them at an auto parts store, you can buy them on line in packs of 10.... hate to say it but sounds like you need a few.

you can always redrill the hole a size bigger and retap new threads.not alot of metal surrounding the hole so be carefull

Anderson pickup screws are just a little bigger and might work?

aren't EMG screws also a little bigger? would be easier to find them.

Not all pickups have the same size holes, are you sure you don't just need a bigger screw?

I have soldered nuts to pickups when they are stripped, works great if you're patient.

solder nuts to the pickups, or put styrofoam under the pickup or cardboard to hold it up - allows for easy adjustment and wont let it move much.

I think you're looking at a tap/die set--Home Depot should have small ones--just re-tap the hole and install the appropriate size screw. Sucks that sellers are doing that.

Yes...yes it does.
I just don't get it.

I take great care around my instruments. I can't understand how these holes get blown out to begin with. I can only imagine that they must be using a cordless screwdriver and pull the screw out way to fast and it strips the hole, or something like that.

What sucks, is that I'm pretty much 2 for 2...I bought 2 used pickups from folks on these forums, and have gotten burned twice now.

Just sucks.

At least this seller offered to refund my money if i send him back the pickup.
so at least he's trying to make it right, ya know.

When I direct mount new pups, I use a smaller screw that does not jack the existing threads. I have been burned like that before as well, and I just tap new threads a size larger.

If you don't have a tap set, then just super glue a nut on there.
