What do you guys think of these pancake patch cables?

I'm currently using Planet Waves solderless cables on my board. I was searching around for smaller profile plugs and I found these cheap-o Hosa patch cables. I know! Hosa = :thumbsdown: :aww: :cry: :bleh: But... dang! these plugs are low-profile! I wonder if replacing the cable with quality cable but using these plugs would be a good idea.

Why not just order some Switchcraft jacks like that and some cable of your choice? Make your own.

I use those exact Hosa cables on my board and so does the other guitar player in our band. I have NEVER had a problem. They work great.

Well, I see your impressive list of gear there... And if you can patch them with these and be happy, they must be pretty good.

I've seen Switchcraft jacks. I don't think I've ever seen flat ones like these. The whole point is them being flat like this in order to place pedals closer together on the board and save space.
 
These patch cables are the ones that have died on me the fastest. I have no issue with the Planet Waves cables at all.
 
I have a few of those plugs, and attempted to make my own. they are SUPER slim, but they are a total bitch to solder...

Haha! Yeah, but once they're soldered. I bet they are SOLDERED!

You may want to ask Dave Friedman on the Racksystems forum what he recommends.
 
since someone else on this board was kind enough to post this when i was going about building my pedal board/rack i will repost it for you. it helped me a ton!

Using your document there, I did a search and found that switchcraft makes a version of this pancake plug. I found it here...

So, if I combine those with some MOGAMI cabling and take my time to solder them nicely, I'll end up with some awesome quality cabling that'll save space on my board.

I see the guy also recommends using 3M dual lock. I'm thinking of going for that too. I don't like how my pedals move about with regular velcro.

From the recommendations, it's sounds like it's Bob Bradshaw. I read very similar comments in an article about pedalboards in Guitar Player Mag. Yep, I'm pretty sure it's him.

yeah, i believe Bob Bradshaw did write that up for one of his customers.

I used Neutrik/Switchcraft connectors and Mogami cabling to make my rig and i had a blast. the first patch cable i made took me like 30 minutes but after that i could finish most cables in like 5 minutes or so.

Dude, I'm finally making these cables. Yes, they are a bitch to solder. There's like nowhere to solder the ground to. I'm trying to solder to the inner body, but the heat disperses too fast.
 
SCREW THIS! :doh: :bleh: :powpow: :codeak: :cry: :uzi: This is absolutely lame! Switchcraft, whatever! Brand name and all the BS! Not having a tab for the ground is stupid. The inner cable is super easy to solder, but the outer one is stupid-hard. If they only had a little tab to solder to!!!!

Crap!!!! And I bought like a dozen of these!!!!! :doh: :cry:
 
Never again...! I continued trying... No luck. And, have lots of experience soldering.

I should've bought the cheap taiwanese plugs. At least those have a little tab to solder the ground to.

Oh well, so I have to take all 12 plugs and shove them up my rear end and buy something else.

Yeah, I'm pissed! I thought this would work. :aww:

Hi Nick, It's 40 watts.

But you know what? I think I discovered what the problem is. It's the George L's. See, a lot of people have had success soldering George L cables to their own plugs. But I don't think they work well with the Switchcraft 228s. They get really hot because you need to solder to the body itself, therefore the heat dissipates quickly. As soon as I attached the cable, the heat goes from the plug into the cable and melts it. This, because the cable is so thin.

I attempted it with planet waves cable, and I got it to work in one shot.

So, I'm probably going to make them with planet waves cable instead. Or, if I want to go all hi-tech, I'll try and find some Mogami cable. -D
