Bogner XTC, best amp I ever owned or played thru.

Bogner Ecstasy. Christopher Cross and country artists use them... AND rock guys... and metal guys.

I can't think of any other amp head that crosses musical genres as well.

 :D

Most versatile I would have to say is the Bogner XTC 20th Anniversary. That amp can cop all styles convincingly.

Interesting thread. I've come to realize that all my keepers are all excellent specimens of "versatility". That being said:

VH4: Already mentioned, and ya, this is a totally versatile, potent, beautiful sounding amp...takes color (stomps) amazingly well too.
Hagen: Same as above, but it's a bit more greasy feeling...I love it.
20thA EL34/KT77: As per the many mentions above, this amp is out-fkn-standing and can lay it out like none other.

Mak4 Preamp: Surprise surprise, it's an incredibly versatile preamp that's incredibly well priced.

There it is, and once AGAIN, surprise surprise, these are all my current heads.

Peace,
Mojo

MMMM, That sounded good!! Would have liked to have heard more cleans and low gain though, looked/sounded like a better designed Einy didn't it?

I dunno if there is a perfect amp, but I have been playing on a Matchless Independence lately that certainly has my interest peaked.

BTW I guess my VH4S does a pretty good job.

From what I've had and have now the vh4 or herbert.

Yep man your Diezels are killer. So is your Suhr modded Marshall. oh and your SLO. :D

None. What you are asking is a contradiction to electronics. No one amp can do it all as well as single channel amps that are designed for the best tone weather it be cleans, low/mid gains or high gain. You cannot have them all in one and if you feel you can you are not in the know. There will always be a sacrifice. A single channel will always sound and feel purer than a switcher. The more crap you put in the tube path the more pure tone, feel, dynamics, degradation you will have. If you are asking a reasoanble question like what is the best amp on the market that can do good cleans, low/mid gain, and high gain you will have varying opinions.

i wasn't asking what amp does everything the best, i was asking what amp that is able to do a variety of things does them all as well as can be expected. obviously i know there is no one amp with the best tones possible for every channel, but there's definitely ones out there that can encompass impressive clean, dirt, and high-gain tones good enough to be the only amp you'd really need for whatever style you're playing (without being a total tone perfectionist).

JCM800 with a good OD and effective use of your guitar's volume knob !

If I'm just listing the best all around amps I've personally played, I'd have to say my Mark IV, modded recto, VH4 and XTC 101B.

Never played a Meathead, but I'd bet it could pull off many tones convincingly! Same with a 20th XTC.

Being a VHT fan boy, I have to go with the Ultralead. Seriously, there isnt a sound that thing CAN'T replicate if you what you are doing with the graphic EQ, and most importantly ARE A GOOD MUSICIAN. The effects loop is perfect, all 3 channels are completely usable, boost, functions, EQ shifts that do wonders, The gain is completley usable all the way through the spectrum,THE PERFECT live amp....I could go on and on,but to me, they are just exceptional. The Bogner xtc, and Mark IV also get a nod from me in the " All around exceptional amp" award, especially the xtc. While the mark IV is more my style, I feel for what the xtc does, it can't be beat for the quality tones that thing produces.

You will not be disappointed.

For me it would be the herbert. Killer cleans very nice warm overdrive and brutal very articulate high gain. Throw a MXR 10 band eq in the loop and you get some heavenly tones man for sure...

I don't have any personal experience, but check out that 5150 III... I've been going over clips and videos this the past week, and haven't heard a single bad sound yet. It can do everything from smooth, lush cleans, spanky overdrive, to gnarly modern high-gain. The amp seriously seems perfect, and I'm a step away from selling an Axe FX II to fund a 50w version with matching 2x12.
