Interesting thread. I've come to realize that all my keepers are all excellent specimens of "versatility". That being said:

VH4: Already mentioned, and ya, this is a totally versatile, potent, beautiful sounding amp...takes color (stomps) amazingly well too.
Hagen: Same as above, but it's a bit more greasy feeling...I love it.
20thA EL34/KT77: As per the many mentions above, this amp is out-fkn-standing and can lay it out like none other.

Mak4 Preamp: Surprise surprise, it's an incredibly versatile preamp that's incredibly well priced.

There it is, and once AGAIN, surprise surprise, these are all my current heads.

Peace,
Mojo

Glad to see the MAKO Mak 4 made it onto the list- something I'm considering for recording- actually in the same League for tones as these others? That says a lot .

I would recommend this preamp, powered through a decent tube power amp, ANY day for pretty well ANY application. It's got massive breadth in its tonal capabilities, it's voiced amazingly well, it takes changes in glass very nicely and distinguishably. Ya, I'm still floored by this preamp - as I've said before - if it was priced 3x as much, people would give it more attention as it would be more "booooteeky"; but no. It's priced affordably and it's a true contender. FWIW, I run mine through a KT88 loaded 2/90/2 Fryette into a Fryette Deliverance. I've also run it through the power section of my VH4 and my 20thA. But overall, I like the transparency of the 2/90/2 due to its headroom, it lets the Mak4 speak for itself.

Hope this helps.

best doesn't exist ;)

Bogner Ecstasy is one versatile amp however :)

I think the VH4 is at least in the top 5 of any amp every made so far when it comes to "best all around amp".

now having said that, there are cheaper options that do FANTASTICALLY in the all around world.

For example the Mark IV is a great example of this.

incredibly, a nice Fender Bassman with a GOO OD box will get you sounding PRETTY mean and is extremely versatile.

I keep my Ecstasy around for just that reason...very versatile and sounds fantastic.

VH4 and XTC, perhaps the reigning kings of tone?

It's all personal, but I can say I LOVE my pants flappin' infront of either a Diezel (Hagen especially) or the 20thA. When those volumes get up there, man, it's hard to make anything sound bad. There's simply no 'suck' dial on these amps. It doesn't come as an option

Carol Ann Triptik, 3 channels, dual modes, killer clean and gains, loop and a solo boost. Can't see any base you cannot cover.

VH4 (or must any Diezel) But I like seeing the Mako up there  first time I heard one I was blown away.

Most well made amps....if you know how to use it! My 20th Bogner Shiva and PWE can cover any gig I want amazingly well. I also thikn the Fryette Sig:X is amazing. Egnater Mod 50 as well.

It is a love hate thing for a lot of people, but if there could be only one, I have decided it would be my Soldano SLO.

I actually love the cleans on when sent to crunch - volume rolled back.

That said I have never played the Bogners or Diezels, but my SLO gets rave reviews from my imaginary friends when I am jammin in the basement

Thats a tough one( ask that one 30 years ago and it'd be a Marshall or mesa mk series 80% of the time id bet)....for me, after owning a Herbert,VH4,Einey,Schmidt,SLO,Shiva,Splawn,Badcat, Mesa Mk series,Roadkings,Rectos, princetons, deluxes, jcm 800s,....I seem to always come back my Mesa MK III Coli red stripe or MK IV.I just cant get away from those mesa's....although my main gigging amp right now is the 20th anniv. Shiva...

Rhodes Colossus.

Although I did get to play the Rhodes Artemis (3ch rackmount) and all the new modes/voicings are very cool and make it extremely flexible. Those implemented into the 4ch Colossus would (will ;) ) be even cooler.
