What do you think of this trade? Mesa for Mesa

So for awhile now I've been thinking of getting a combo for gigging, and last year I picked one up. A Tremoverb 2x12, but then one of the bands I bought it for went on hiatus, and I decided it was just way too loud for home use, and decided to sell it.
I also learned I did not get along with an Open Back cab that most combo's come with.
So I've been on the lookout for a closed back combo, and I came across a guy on Craigslist looking to trade his Mesa Roadster 2x12 Combo (which is a Closed Back 2x12 cab combo). I actually wanted to buy it, but it seems like he is really just looking more for a trade, so I thought about which amps I might be willing to let go, and the one amp I've been iffy about since getting it has been my Mark V. I just never use it, and always think other amps sound better for different sounds I am going for at a given time, and don't really think I've given it much of a chance. I for sure haven't ever gotten it dialed in right.
That's not to say I don't like the Mark, but I just haven't really used it enough to give it a real chance.
Now, this guy says he is interested in my Mark V, and I've been trying to decide whether or not it is
A: a good trade (as in, I know I can sell my Mark V for $1650 any day of the week. Can I say the same about the Roadster? Combo's are MUCH harder to sell, since they are much more expensive to ship)
B: Do I really want to get rid of my Mark V?
I can always get another one. Or just get a Mark IV if really necessary.

And please, I don't need to hear opinions about whether or not a Combo makes sense.
Someone may say they are too heavy.
Guess what, they are like 100lbs. OK. So is my Mesa cab, and I still then have to also lug around a 50lb head. So what's the issue?

This isn't the issue, it's whether or not a Roadster 2x12 Combo is on par with a Mark V for an even exchange, or is the Mark V a better amp, and worth more than the Combo.

Both amps are covered under warranty still, and both warranty's can be transferred.
The Mark V is about a year and a half old or so, and the Roadster is probably about 2 1/2.

Whatcha think?

Should I do the trade? or skip it?

tremoverb =/= roadster

no way, no how.

roadster is much darker and different than the others. the only thing you have going for the roadster is versatility which it seems the mark V's were also designed for.

if you like what you have, then why change it? if you hate the mark V and looking for a change, the roadster is my personal favorite out of them all, however your experiences with a tremoverb open back and a roadster will not be the same - totally different animals. I know because i researched both in detail most recently myself and have spoken to many people and also played one.

FWIW i also played a mark V, too many knobs - 10 minutes of switch turning and i left it - not my ballgame at all.

If it was a MarkIV and not a MarkV, then I'd say keep it.

Try the Roadster and see if you like it.

If you hate tweaking, go Roadster. I used to have that amp and rocked it hard fro two years. Yeah, it is a little darker than the standard Dual Rec, but that isn't a bad thing. The Roadster is very easy to dial in to. I don't think the same could be said about the Mark V though.

I agree, Roadster is very noticeably darker than the rest of the Recto line from my experience.

It was immediately noticeable the first time I plugged into my old Roadster head.

As long as the OP is aware of that going in...

R-

I can only relate my experiences (which you probably already know). I loved my Mark V when I first got it but as i played it more and more I found myself really using it as a one-channel amp (CH2 crunch mode) because all the other sounds didn't inspire me. I eventually sold it.

I know what you've gone through with the Mark V and can see the interest, but to me the roadster is even more "character-less" than the V. For your sound, I'd say try and find a IIC++ or a III Red stripe. I think you'll be WAY happier.

Cheers,

Yeah, sell the Mark V for 16,17 or whatever and buy something cheaper that you like and end up with some cash in the end. Heads usually pull more money than combos so it seems like you have the upper hand with a desirable amp in head form where he has a less desirable amp in combo form. You could pick up a killer combo for a grand. I personally thought the Roadster combo was a buzzy mess.

Or just pick up a Mesa 1X12 and rock the Mark V head.
