If your plugging a 1977 LP into a Rockerverb 50 into an Orange 4x12 playing blues to heavy old school 70's rock with both channels.....what other heads if any sound similar (clean and dirty) if plugged into the same cab??

AND...can be had new or used for $1500 or less.

Also, what is the difference between the Mk I and Mk II?

I think there are different tubes between the 2 versions; 6v6 for mk1 and el34 for mk2. I suppose a similar amp might be a Marshall Superbass. It has that clear crunchy gain and is a bit darker.

The rv 50 is a cool amp, it cops the brit marshall tone sort of but with a bit more low end, I always end up running mine with the bass on 3. The differances with the mk1 and mk2 rv 50 are the mk1 uses four 6v6 power tubes while the mk2 uses two el34, the od preamp voicing was kept the same and the reverb was upgraded as was the fx loop that is supposed to be more transparent on the mk2. the reverb will overpower the tone quickly on the mk1 version and is un useable after 2.

So is there a tonal difference on the gain side between the el34 and 6v6's worth speaking about? Sounds like either version would be a winner. My guitarist says he's buying one next week. For our new 2nd project we are starting I'll be playing guitar with him and co-fronting the band so I definatley want to get one too.
I always loved the RV tone. You can get so many tones from just the two channels. In the old days I would have gone straight for the RV100 but I think that would be overkill. I'de either run it through an Orange 212 or 412 or possibly pick up one or two 1960b's (20 year old ones i can get cheap)

Here's a thought....if I ran through a 1960b with the RV....I was thinking either all greenbacks, all v30's, or G12H30 (< if i remembered the name right) Possible greenies and G12's in an X. Any thoughts on that? Definatley wouldnt run the GT75's with the RV.

I think all Orange cabs come with V30s, so that's part of the Orange sound.

I've never seen an Orange cab with anything other than V30s, they're great cabs too! Lots of bottom end and great construction. Pricey new though..

It depends on your budget really, 1960Bs can be had pretty cheap, there's loads of them going for £150-200 every day on Ebay pretty much. I'd go with V30s personally, see if you can try out an Orange RV50 with different heads I guess.

6V6s and el34s will sound different, a friend of mine in an indie band has the combo version and it sounds great! He said that when he was researching them he found a lot of people who had modded their older 6V6 Rockerverbs to run 2 el34s, I wouldn't buy one over the other based on that though.

I thought the Mesa Electra-Dynes I played had some similarities to a RV.
