What exactly IS the point of strap locks?

They're a pain to install and can even ruin guitars, so if you feel you need your strap more secure why not use those cheaper plastic circular things you see at music store counters usually or, better yet, those rubber beer bottle stoppers?!

In all my time of gigging, I've never needed to take the strap off my guitar for whatever reason. It doesn't get in the way when when the guitar's in the case or I'm sitting down and playing.

I'm probably missing something here, but I guess it's something I've never got!

I have a leather strap that's from 71, It is waaaay worn, but I can't part with it. If I would lean forward or anything more than stand straight up, I had to fumble for my guitar before it broke the headstock.. so strap lock! That strap stays with that one guitar and that's it.

I started my journey into strap locks way back when using Dunlops. After the ball bearings failed and I was introduced into the feeling of a Les Paul falling and hitting the top of my bare foot, I switched to Schallers. Now after many years of noise and various parts coming loose, I think I have finally come to the conclusion that I'm going back to regular strap pins and using rubber washers.

I like elliptical strap buttons and I rarely remove the strap so the leather stays pretty stiff and rigid. I never have problems.

I use them on Les Pauls because of where the button is on the horn. Haven't really needed them on other guitars.

With Schallers I lock-tite the nut and put a but of grease in the cup, so I don't have the issues most complain about.

I used strap locks for a while but I never really got on with them. I found that if I made any movement the metal parts would click and break my gate and bring on the squeelies. So I started using big regular buttons until I noticed that bass string tree buttons would be better and started using those. I finally stumbled on a manufacturer who made big buttons and have used those ever since.

I used to never take my strap off, had one for each guitar. But I've been playing with a wireless more, and I like to leave it attached to the strap. It takes a bit longer to change guitars, but I really only do that between sets anyway. I fitted all of my guitars (except my '56 Junior) with Dunlop Straploks.

Doesn't really look like I've missed any secret trick, apart from using a wireless pack and changing guitars. I still maintain the best straplock is the Grolsch stopper, plus it makes you look like a badass because it shows you've drunk at least TWO beers in your lifetime

I've been using the schallers forever and love them. I've never had any problems with them. I started using them when I was leaning over to adjust a pedal and my guitar fell off the strap. Cheap insurance for me
