What if you had stopped when you found it?

We all have a favorite, go-to amp that is your main bitch.
The one that never fails you. It always makes you smile more than the others.
Yet most of us added to our stable, wanting to try as many flavors as we could.
"Maybe there is something I might like better...."(whispered quietly to ourselves while looking at the credit card)
Perhaps you tried every model a certain manufacturer had before settling on a particular one(Me with Diezel,ENGL,VHT,Marshall etc)
Or the various revisions of a specific model(looking at you guys with the C2+ and rectifier habit).
Or upgrading when newer higher gain options came out(me with the Peters...hyrda/chimera/FSM).

But there is always one that you come back to that makes it all worthwhile.

Now in you head....try to do the math.
Figure out when you found THAT amp.
Then TRY to remember everything you bought after THAT amp.
Or maybe you sold THAT amp, went thru a bunch of others before getting THAT amp again.
I can pretty much call my 3 local bros and point to my amps and between us we might be able to do this math.
But in some cases I can't remember how I acquired them.
Some were ordered, some were trades...but most came from this forum in some way, shape or form.

My reason for this thought process was trying to whittle mine down to a top 5.
If I sold everything else, what would I recoup?
Then I took it a bit farther to "what if I had ONLY bought those 5?"
Or worse yet...what if I had just taken a best bros advice and only bought my main bitch?

In reality, the chase is often better than the catch(big shout out to Lemmy).
But if I go into Baskin Robins,I know I'm not going to like 25 of the 31 flavors....because I tried them all.
The chase for MY main bitch(s) is over. Has been for a couple of years.
That doesn't stop me from wanting an M.I. or Driftwood or even a...(can't believe I'm saying this)...AXF3.
But just stopping the chase and ending the collecting has meant not only clean credit cards but also a fat bank account.
On the other hand,my awesomely bad ass credit rating is a DIRECT result of amp chasing for about 15 years.

Was it all worth it?
Would I do it again?
Would I avoid this forum and all you fucking enablers?

All I know for sure is what amps I would avoid like the plague.
Big thanks to those here who helped along the way.
I sure enjoyed the chase.

Now....try to do the math yourself.

First head was a soldano avenger 100. I could have kept that amp and been fine. I still miss it. But I had a good ride of amps after. Definitely worth it.

I could’ve stopped at my first tube amp, a Peavey Ultra 120.

And to be honest, what I’ve learned is that within reason it doesn’t matter. I have had what I feel is a great sound with Soldano SLOs, JCM 900s and Twin Reverbs with pedals in front, amongst 50-ish other amps.

I feel I’ve had better tone than most of heroes besides EVH since about my second tube amp.

oh man 1st time I played a plexi with a boost I knew that was it for me. Been using that for like 10+ years. Got a 6505MH just to record rhythms, but the plexi wins for me. For me its not the money, its the time going down rabbit holes i dont like. I recently did that with a few boosts, ended back with the SD-1, right where I started lol

Started with a 5150II, couldn’t afford a Marshall, modded it to oblivion, played that for ages.

I played a Laney GH100TI. Loved it. Swore I’d own one. I didn’t know at the time it was JCM800 based.

Bogner XTC was based on playing an uberschall rev green at Lugo’s amp fest in 2010. I knew the XTC was Marshall based.

The metroplex was more of a dream amp, that was the most recent and arguably last one I’ve bought - it can do EVH, modded Marshall, ‘68 stock, ‘67 stock, and has gig friendly features.

The 1974 Marshall that I’ve repaired and built the past few years is what gets all of my play time though.

Order that id sell them from most likely to least likely:

Metroplex
5150 II
Bogner
Laney

Problem is that once we find that amp, we think there’s some amp that costs 20 times as much then it will sound 20 times better. Nope! I’ll take my Marshall 8100 over most any high gain modern amp every day.

Damnit,I can't even do that!!!
It was super hard deciding to sell two of my least faves to justify an AXEFX3 to go in the rack with the Kemper.
Now that money is just added to the pile in savings.

As for Bloodrock,ignore his post.
He is far and away the cheapest mother fucker I have ever known.
But one of the most honest and loyal bros I have ever had.
I'm lucky to have him in my circle.

He'd have to be, especially if you watch him at gigs!

I keeed, I keeed, there's a lot of ss stuff that sounds very good - the ampeg vh140c comes to mind quickly

I was just starting to lust after a Metropoulos DVL-1...I guess I'm surprised that Metro is at the top of your list, it gets such rave reviews.

I do love me some 8100 and it is a beast of an amp, but I like many amps quite a bit more.

Agreed. It was one of those amps for me that sounded actually quite impressive on its own until directly getting compared to others and then not so great IME

Apparently it works really well for supplementing another amp on recording.

For the $200 I paid for it, it was stupid to sell it really. Cheaper than some pedals I've owned...LOL!

Loved the VH140c I had. One I had was mint. I just got paranoid about it bursting into flames one day and being stuck with a door stop.

It did lack a bit of that tube warmth when played side x side my other amps. Great amp though!!!

It isnt warm, or tube like - and i think thats part of the magic. It isn't trying to sound like a tube amp, and it has this glassy, sterile thing going on that's really recognizable. Especially with like youngblood in Kamelot, and all the death metal bands that use them.

Yeah no arguing how much amp it is for the money. At the time I was trying it I think it was around $150 asking price. I think all my current pedals are more than this amp haha. At that time I think the VH140 and Ibanez TBX150 were also around that price. All a lotta amp for the money. Would have to hear them side by side, but I may have actually liked that Ibanez one best. I think Dino Cazares or maybe someone I’m confusing him with has used it before. But still it sounded like a toy/plastic-y/small/just like trash when AB’ed with the multi-watt triple Rectifier that was there

Yep all are great non-tube amp options. Maybe the amp market would have turned out more interesting if more companies leaned into that style of amp instead of the line 6 spyder/peavey vypyr/marshall code onslaught of the 2010s.

Never played one, but I imagine the triple rec would make most amps sound small and like a toy!
