Please state the amp and boost. :)

Peavey 5150 II. EMGs

Gain:4-4.5, SD-1 for extra sustain on leads, gain 0.

Volume: 1

Boost: None

On my rectifier and with any boost, I keep the gain between noon and 2:00.

Well, so far it looks like I use less gain than anyone else here. Strange because my playing sucks.

You didn't include the gain level I use :gethim:

3

AVT 50 with a Maxon OD808

No, I would've done but it wouldn't allow that many poll answers. I did actually have 1-10. I just think beacuse 7 ish is the most used gain setting I'd put the .5s in.

What about without the boost? AVt50? I had one of those in head form, you're using the lead channel on 3 with a boost? :S Can't imagine that'd sound good.

JSX - low gain input, gain@7, straight in.
HT-5 - gain@5, boost pedal level@8, drive@2
GH50L - gain@3, onboard drive boost@6, boost pedal level@5, drive@2

It totally depends on the guitar, pickups, speakers, and where the sweet spot of the combination is.
There's no such thing as any one setting that works in all applications.

5150 III Channel 3 gain set to between noon and 1 o'clock. Sometimes use my TC Nova Drive to boost channels 1-3 of the amp.

5150 III sounds surprisingly great with all knobs at or right around noon. It may be thickheadedness, but I think that in the modern age amps should be engineered to sound at least 'good' with all EQ's at 5 then from there you can cut and boost to taste. ENGL Blackmore is like that as well, I like that about that amp.

Why I listed my pickups and boost. What you're saying is true, I'm really after a genreal idea. Of the people I know my age, the average gain level is about 8-9. Wanted to see how it was, roughly on Rig-Talk.

I never play without a boost. I've never had anyone complain

Hmm fair enough, what works for you I suppose, it was my main amp for a year, I guess I was using the stock cabinet and speakers, plus my playing is shit.

Tone is in the fingers really.

a 5150 II with gain on 4.5 is more gain than some amps have on 10 - you can't just go by the #'s to know how much gain you're actually using.

Mesa Dual Recto (3 Chan): Channel 2 vintage--gain at 6.5

boost: MXR 10 band, cutting some bass and treble, gain rolled back, level bumped up just a tad, and goosing the mids

Pickups: mostly the stock JB in my Parker Fly Mojo, or the stock 1st generation Dimarzio in my Parker Fly Classic (I push the level on the boost a bit more with this guitar)

Yes, but for metal riffs/leads it's fair to assume people are using reasonably high gain amps. If I wanted to seriously compare how much gain I use compared to other guitarrists I'd go about it a different way.

Uberschall Rev2 around 1:00 (6) for rhythms
Boosted with a Timmy pedal set to clean and raising gain to 3:00 (8) level
EMGs and SD pups

Pea\/ey ultra plus gain on 2:30 and a dual rectifier with gain on 1:30 also a mesa 50 caliber + with gain on 7. No boost on any of them.
