What is your local music scene like?

DC/NoVA/Baltimore scenes can vary depending on style.

There's a solid metal scene in the area, but very little paid show opportunities for those bands. Lots of P2P, especially in Baltimore. DC's a bit better with that, but metal/hard rock is way less popular here. It's all DIY/alternative/emo/punk/hardcore - and I've found that many of those groups do not want to play with a metal or hard rock band.

NoVA is probably consistently the best in the area - you can make $ playing covers and a few originals at quite a few bars.

If you're an unestablished band though, it can take quite a bit of time to break into the scenes in the DC metro region.

The musicians/bands are mostly nice people and good to work with - especially in DC and NoVA. I've had mixed encounters in Baltimore.

If any other DC locals are playing out and on this forum, shoot me a PM. Classic metal/thrash and rock band here.

Hey I'm in DC as well...I have to admit, tho, that I'm not familiar with the scene here at all.

Back from the dead. I missed this the first time around but said fuck it and decided to chime in anyway.
I'm in the Northern Virginia area too and have been out of the scene for years now. If any of you local metal guys are playing out ping me and let me know where. I'd love to come out.

I'm in Portland, OR and I'm not sure what other PNW gus are talking about. I can go out any night of the week and catch live blues, rock, or alt/americana/whatever. Weekly someone notable rolls through. Maybe I'm just easier to please.

Edmonton. I've only lived here for around 4 years and been active in the music scene for about a year and a half.

My last band was kind of indie/alternative, did fairly well and that scene was fairly cool. All original stuff with some covers thrown in.

I'm told the city has a huge metal/punk scene, although I've only ever touched it at the edges when I went to see friends play. My newest project is a metal band, hoping to be ready to start booking gigs in late Jan so we'll see how that works out.

Honolulu,I have not been in a gigging band for about 7 or 8 years but i am still connected to a lot of people in the scene. The scene here is mainly just people having fun and not expecting a whole lot out of it, except the youngsters I suppose. It can get a little frustrating because many of the same bands have been kind of in control in a way as to just bill themselves as the main act even though that might not be the consensus.

CT is lousy. If you're lucky, maybe there will be a cover band at a bar.

Orlando-I'm kind of new to living here but I've lived in the general area for my entire adult life and I'm old. Orlando/Tampa used to be a hotbed 20 to 30 years ago. Now, it's just the same as it is everywhere. Deadsville except for the same old half assed weekend warriors playing the same old cover band crap in some chicken wing joint. Sad but true.

East TN, Tri-cities area, music scene is very awesome. Tons of good local bands and plenty of touring acts come through but other than that we have several awesome punk bands, heavy metal, thrash, some very progressive sounding bands, blues, rock, cover bands. Also, some very talented bluegrass, country, Jazz. I mean you can always find something cool going on. Of course we have lots of bad bands too, but a lot goes on here and it is awesome to see.

Some really great clubs down here too, always treat you right, and welcome any style from extreme black metal to just straight up noise-yes noise is a thing and it's actually pretty interesting

I consider it a really good scene- not all of it is my cup of tea, but it is still good to see so many people turn out for so many different types of shows.

Hey man! I'm in the Tri-Cities area too! I thought I was the only one on this board around here! I must be missing out (I probably am since I hardly ever get out) because I never hear about any good bands around here. There is plenty of bluegrass and flatpicking though, which I'm not into. I'm more old school rock and metal.

Nice to meet a local on here!

In Johnson City at the Hideaway we get a lot of really cool local bands,Capones recently has jumped on board welcoming more local shows and not ONLY touring acts now too. I've been playing around here for some time so I guess I'm just a little more in the loop haha, We don't really have any awesome straight up rock bands (lots of indie rock, can't get into that) but we definitely have some cool Metal going on, I could definitely point you in the right direction sometime if you want to check some stuff out
yo, this zach from bacalou?

Yes JC is awesome, The Hideaway is forever my home and Tarv my dude. I met the best friends I’ve ever had there. It definitely became more of a metal town after Wes quit booking, so my interests took me other places because I was more into punk/hardcore shit. I’ve been on here for years and never seen anybody else from the Tri-Cities area.

Ass. Unless you like house, techno, dance, salsa, merengue or any other latino styled music.

Central CT, not so much

I posted and didn't share anything about my current town, RVA. It's fuckin' KILLER for weirdo rock, indie, punk, metal, etc. I don't know anything about the old dude bar rock/cover band crowd, but original music is really alive here, and it's such a good spot for bands to slide through on east coast tours. There's a good amount of large caliber bands that come through too, but I've only caught couple real deal "concerts" since moving here. I stick to the small clubs, house shows, etc. This is the only city I've ever resided in where I have had to choose between three different amazing shows for the same evening, and the only place where I've able to catch a 7PM all-ages show and ride over to another venue to catch the last couple acts of a later show in the same night. I'm about to go see a couple great bands tonight actually.
