Just picked up this 1988 Laney Pro-Tube Lead 50 watt head in a package deal(owner would not separate). Kind of just going through it and cleaning it up a bit. Any idea of the brand of tubes?

i'd guess the 34's are German, no idea on the preamp tube.

RFT's? I almost bought a couple of those not that long ago to try. Power tubes work but the pins were bent and guide post were both broken. Not gonna keep the amp because I don't need another. Cool sounding amp but not very tight in the bottom. I got some very cool rock tones though.

I think both Pre's and Power Tubes are RFT's. Maybe you could try rebiasing a little hotter for to eek out a little more bottom end out of it. RFT's are good tubes. Could be original tubes in there.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure your right. There is enough bottom end( and a crazy amount by pulling the bass boost) but I guess the distortion at higher levels is just a too flubby for me(doesn't help that I tune to drop C ). I actually replaced the RFTs (I'm keeping them :D ) with some generic Peavey preamp tubes that came in my VTM. They sound good in other amps i've tried them in and they made the Laney sound better to my ears. I'm not gonna try biasing the amp. Too lazy I guess. The power tubes work but they should be replaced since the guide pins are broken off and who knows how many hours (years) are on them. I'm selling the amp. Thanks for the help identifying.

george lynch used these laney's live on the 1985 tooth and nail tour.

excerpt from the man himself:

Somewhere during the tour, George dumped the entire rig and switched to the Laney AOR Pro Series heads and Marshall cabinets. "I picked up on the Laney’s midway through the tour. When I was younger and growing up on early Sabbath I had read in Melody Maker (English music paper) how Iommi used Laneys. He was a big hero of mine and when they were available again I jumped in. Unfortunately, these AOR heads were nothing like the “real” early Laneys"

cool that you managed to find one

those rft's are great v1 or v2 preamp tubes....id' def keep that at least.

Someone stole 2 of your power tubes.

Nope. It's supposed to be like that. It was the factory dual exhaust that the PO removed. :D Guy coming to buy the amp today. I'm keeping all 4 RFT preamp tubes. I put some old preamp tubes that originally came in my VTM (they do sound good) in there. I also removed the RFT power tubes that were very old and had the plastic guide pin thing broken off on both tubes. I put in a pair of JJ KT77s I had laying around. Amp actually sounds much better. Got some really cool rock and 80s metal-ish tones. Adding a tube screamer really helped. It also liked the EMG more than the JB. Then I plugged into my Splawn and it made the Laney sound tiny.

That's similar to my amp, but I've got the 6 knob version. It's a great amp... Can't help with the tubes, but I love the amp!

Amp is gone. Sold. Good amp but not for what I play. Sold it with pretty much new KT77s for $275.
