What pick ups would you put in a Gibson Explorer ?

Another thought - have you messed with the wiring config or the pots/caps to see if you can shape the current set to closer match what you are seeking? Just a thought.

I'm pretty simple when it comes to guitar wiring ....

I was all into the Jimmy Paige wiring on all my LP's ..... with the CTS Pushpulls ....

you would think the ability to split both humbuckers and run series or parallel plus the option of In and out of phase would be cool and useful ...

I never F-ing used any of it ..... so those all got switched to standard 50's wiring over the last couple of years

my Explorer was setup to split the coils and go series or parallel ............... never used it on that guitar either ..... and I haven't really played this guitar in like two years ..... so this past weekend .... I gutted the electronics and figured at least put something different in the bridge while I have to re wire it anyway

I have emg's in mine. Edit-just noticed you only want passives. sorry
I only used EMG's from 1989 to 2017 ...... then I borrowed a buddies LP with a JB in the bridge for a few weeks .....

and was totally sold ...

Yep, I go 50s wiring atw. I don't really enjoy split or tapped tones for the most part either so I have done away with that as well. The simpler, the better for the most part.

The reason I ask is that I found I really enjoy neck humbucking pickups with a .015 value and I have found I dig certain bridges direct or with a .022 or lower cap for increased clarity and edge.

Can really change the feel.

Not as much as new pickups would though lol

I have a small stash of some original Vitamin Q's in that value ..... .015 's ..... I think I'm saving them for more worthy projects ... not sure yet

Nice! Hey, I am really, really loving the set of Blues heritage pickups I have from Planet Tone. I play drop tuned, heavy stuff, and my LP is just absolutely ripping with them.

I see there is a bridge pickup on Reverb right now for $60.

May be worth giving a shot.

I have some of the Vitamin T caps by MojoTone in the .015 value that sound pretty damn great. If you end up wanting to try em out, PM me.

I also have them in the .0047 value for the Eldred mod or whatever but don't really use that mod personally.

I gutted my Explorer today ..... currently have the Duncan Hot Rod Standard set in it ... JB /59 ....

looking for something new and different ..... mainly going to be playing hard rock / thrash with it ...

looking to stay Passive also ..........
Tone by you 😍

Done trying to buy pickups for guitars and have embraced the ones they come with.

Turn knobs, use different amps etc....

Have you tried the Duncan Slash alnico 2.0 set yet? They are my current favorite slightly hot PAF and sound and feel much hotter than expected based on ohm measurement. A nice all around everything pickup. I have a set in my Explorer copy and love them for everything 70's to 90's.

Thrash.........................................

I know you said passive but wasn't EMG 81 85's standard for Bay Area Thrash????

Seymour Duncan Trash Factor JB's

Bill and Becky L500XL

Duncan Custom

Duncan Dimebucker

Not mentioned in the thread yet, but I really love the Anderson H3 and/or H3+ pickups in the bridge of some guitars for thrash. (Match them with an H1, if I recall correctly, for the neck.) They don't fit the classic look, so that may be an issue, but soundwise they're great passives.
