And please specify the type of wood the guitar is made of.

:)

Right now I'm using SD Distortion in a chambered Warmoth mahogany strat with a gonacalo alves/ebony neck, but are seeking other options.

Because of the fact that is a high gain amp, I prefer pups with lower output, both single coil and humbuckers.
PAF like pups complement VH4 pretty well.

My guitar is made of carbon fiber, is hollow, and weighs 5 pounds. I have always used low output pickups, or when a guitar came to me with even a low-to-medium output pickup, I set the pickup low enough in the guitar so that it put out lower going to the amp.

Currently I am using a DiMarzio PAF Pro in the lead position and a DiMarzio Air Classic DP 190 in the rythmn position, as those were the pickups the guitar came with, and as Peter or Olaf can tell you, if I get near a soldering iron, I should be arrested.

If I had the money, I would opt for european-built pickups or maybe some small pickup guru's special winds to get closer to the sounds I hear. I do however work with the pole piece height adjustments and overall heights of the pickups to get what I want from them or as close as is possible. I prefer even string volumes and separation between notes, a low, clear tone on the rythmn pickup and a lead pickup that sounds like a Tele lead pickup on steroids, but with enough fatness not to be thin sounding.

I have an 8-string Blackmachine guitar with swamp ash body and ebony top. Neck is rosewood with ebony fingerboard. The guitar came with Lundgren M8 pickups.

I was thinking to change pups due to the lack of clarity I was experiencing. The alternatives would have been either Harry Haeussel pups or sp custom http://www.spcustompickups.com/index.html which are used in the guitars built by Mr. Hufschmid http://www.hufschmidguitars.com/home.cfm

But now after having purchased the Hagen I do not feel anymore the need to change anything and am extremely happy with my sound.

Both of my guitars have basswood/maple top bodies. At the bridge, one has an Andeson H2 and the other has an H2+ (slightly hotter than the H2). My VH4 prefers the H2, so I probably will swap the H2+ for something lower output. At the neck/middle, both have moderate output stacked singles, which sound great.

EDIT: looks like you have a Hagen. From descriptions on the Internet, that amp may play nicer with higher output pickups than the VH4.

I have DiMarzio Steve Morse signature pickups in two of my guitars, one with poplar body, one with maple/mahogany body. Especially the maple one sounds magic to me.

8's:
- Blackmachine F8 (swamp ash body with mapple top, rosewood neck, zebrano fretb.) special Haussell pickups around 10K.
- Ibanez RG2228 (basswood body, mapple neck, rosewood fb) BKP Black Dogs around 10K.

7's:
- Ibanez RG2077XL (basswood, mapple neck, rosewood fb) bridge: Lundgren M7, middle: Dimarzio Blaze7 single-coil, neck: Dimarzio AirNorton7
- Ibanez RG1527M (basswood, mapple neck, mapple fb): Dimarzio Blaze Custom 7 neck and bridge
- Ibanez RG7 a combination of various guitars (basswood, mapple neck, rosewook fb): birdge: Dimarzio D-Sonic7, neck: AirNorton7

6's:
- Gibson Les Paul (mahogany + mapple top, mahogany neck, rosewood fb): BKP Rebel Yell set around bridge around 14K neck a tad less.
- Bibson Les Paul (mahogany, mahogany neck, ebony fb): BKP Nailbomb set with bridge pu. being around 15K and neck 10K.

I don't remember the resistance of the Dimarzios, but Im sure they are the same as given on their website.

Personaly I like to sound of Blackmachine and LP with Rebel Yels the most. These are most versatile and dynamic. I play a lot of clean stuff as well and usually hate the bridge pickup for cleans.

Bareknuckle Nail Bombs in my Gibson LP Classic. Sound fantastic with all Diezel Models

Best sounds I got out of my Diezels (Herbert, VH4) are, as most have noted, with lower-output pickups, specifically my R8 & R9. Was also able to get a great sound out of a strat with an Air Norton S bridge.

Stock Gibby '57 Classics
Sometimes BB1 or BB2, dependent on the guitar
Definitely the BKP BlackDogs - absolutely outtasight!!
Defiintely the BKP Emeralds - killer knock!!
Definitely the BKP RiffRaffs - amazing tonality!!

I've got axes loaded with the BKP Painkiller and BKP MiracleMans, they are great guitars in _some_ applications, but not with my Diezels.

Overall, lower/moderate output pups are stellar, IMHO.

Mojo

Guitar: Suhr Modern- Mahogany Body w/ plain maple top. Mahogany Neck with Rosewood fretboard.
Pickups: Suhr Aldrichs' rewould by Jim Rolph, neck = 8k, bridge = 9 or 10k (originally 17k bridge and 9k neck)
Amp: Diezel Einstein 100 watt into a 2x12 FL diezel cab w/ Celestion g-65's
I like the lower output myself, lets the guitars tone pop out a little more to me.
Note: I bought the guitar with the pickups already wound down, so I do not know how they compare to standard Suhr Aldrich PU's

VH4 loves the JB in darker sounding guitars

Herbert really like the EMG actives

After using BKP's and Lundgrens, I went for actives (Blackouts) in both of my guitars. Mahogany baritone 7-strings.

Duncan JB in my PRS Singlecut
Dirty South Guitars Southern Thunder in my PRS Standard 24
Dimarzio Billy Corgan signature pickups in my '74/'76 Hardtail Strat

They all sound great with my Herbert.

I really do not agree with this. The worst sound I have ever gotten out of VH4 was a LP Studio with JB+Jazz combination - Changed them to BKP Nailbombs (Alnico) which made huge difference. But as we all know, sound preferences are so personal.

I use a BKP Warpig and a SD Invader through my Herbert, the first is a bit muddy but a proper eq should fix that.

Blackmachine B7 with BKP Warpigs, Alnico, into Einstein.

Not for everyone, admittedly! Surprisingly it cleans up very well but is a bit noisy. :scared:

Einie doesn't like EMG 707s.

Einie does like B tuned Blackmachine B2 with BKP Miracle Man/Mule.

Einie also likes PRS with BKP Cold Sweat set.

In my opinion the lower you tune the lower the output of your pickup shall be.
...well, it's not exactly that simple, but anyways or whatever or something...I'll take a beer now.
