I always begin pulling the best tones outta my amp with nothing in front of the amp(tube screamer, etc.) just to see how clean i can get the amp without falling into the mud pit. Mind you, I always use a ts9 to get me outta the mud no matter what high gain amp im using. I have been using the classic EMG 81 bridge, 85 neck set up for the past 12 years. For some reason this pick up combination is not working well to get the sweetness outta my herbert. Does anyone know if an active pick up has too much output that would savatage the tone that this beast is capable of? Bottom end is still a bit too loose. I've had my Herbert for about a year and a half and am still experimenting with different tube brands(both pre amp and power) and am gonna start getting into different pick up combinations to pull the cleanest most aggressive metal tone and clean tone outta my amp. I need a tighter bottom end pickup that growls even if I have to go passive. Has anyone had the same problem using EMG's with the herbert? Your opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

I get great tones from EMG 81's and 85's, both in bridges. If you want a very clean, but super heavy, ice picky tight when you palm mute, type tone from your herbert, I would go with all KT88's in the power section. Getting that sound described for me was going from the EL34's to 88's, much more than a guitar/pickup change.

Thanks for your response man. I currently have my gibson explorers loaded with 81 and 85. I love 85 in the bridge live but when it comes to tracking, the 81 is much tighter. Any way you can post a sound clip video of your herb so i can listen to what kt88's sound like. The only reason I have not gone that route is cause Peter Diezel does not recomend it and I dont wanna destroy my investment. Took me a while to save for this thing so it would kill me if i blew it up you know. Thanks man.
