What pickups for a PRS CE 24?

Hello

I think I am finally realizing that the Pups on my PRS ce 24 are really the only weak link. What pups would work well in this guitar? I like the general sound of them, just that they are a bit flat in dimension. Also, if I swap out the pups, will I still get the 5 positions?

If you want to keep it in the PRS family, try a Tremonti on the bridge. Nice, sizzling, high output.

I am not picky about staying within the PRS family, it would be nice to keep the 5 way switchable positions however.
 
Removed the stock bass/treble pups and 5-way in my Custom24, installed EMG 81/85 pups and a toggle switch. Never looked back, totally different guitar now, far much better. :thumbsup:
 
PRS Tremonti Treble is my current favorite pickup. Both myself and our other guitarist use them. Very versatile pickups.
 
Is the 24 an Alder model or Mahogany? IMO you cant go wrong with a JB in the alder ones.......come to think of it that should work well even if its mahogany.

There is a Tremonti Bass, but I prefer the Dragon II bass paired with the Tremonti Treble. I'm not 100% about the 5 way switching, as I swapped out for a 3 way w/tap a long time ago. The Tremonti bass isn't splittable if I remember correctly, while the Trem. Treble and Dragon II bass are.
 
When I first got my CE24, I too felt the HFS pup was a little on the weak side. I had considered replacing both pickups with Blackouts.

I took the guitar to my luthier for a set up and to see about the pickup swap, and he suggested first that he put a 1 meg volume pot in the guitar to see how that would sound. It made a lot of difference and was a mere fraction the cost of a new set of pickups.

Just a suggestion as I had a similar experience.

I like that pup too, its hot, but not overly so. its tight and you can hear everything in chords. killer rhythm pup. I have them in 2 at the moment. But.... what kind of stuff will you be playing on them??

I have had this guitar for years. The stock pups never really bothered me much, untill recently I guess. I am just finding them 1 dimensional. They are hot, but slightly on the dull side. I woudn't mind for them to be a tad brighter I guess, and just something that has more depth and dimension. I do a wide variety of styles and sounds, so I am not pigeon holed into just rock or what not. I like Rock, blues, slight breakup sounds as well.
 
Im not real fond of the Tremonti for bluesy or mild gain stuff, but it will eat the HFS alive for rock and higher gain stuff. I would give a MCP Torque my vote to cover all those bases

It doesn't decent bluesy/mid gain stuff when tapped. Especially when combined with a nice tapped neck pickup.
 
I've owned a first run 1988 CE24 since, well, 1988. This is an extraordinary guitar - played acoustically it's extremely resonant and quite loud, a very musically expressive instrument. That said the stock HFS / Bass pickups were just terrible IMO. It took quite a few sets of pickups over many years to find an ideal set, pickups that complimented the instruments natural voice the way I hear it. I've found the Seymour Duncan Seth Lover PAF's are a perfect match. The set I have in the guitar now are Seth Lover's from the SD custom shop - lightly potted (only the hardware below the coils - coils left unpotted) and coils taped tightly to minimize microphonics. They bring this guitars rich, detailed voice to life amplified!

Oh, I gotcha. I havent heard a tapped Tremonti. I did not wire it for that when I installed it. I remember when I had the Dual-Recs, they really liked that pup :thumbsup: :thumbsup:
 
tremonti pup is a nice choice and i like it alot, i also have emgs in my mccarty trem and they sound good.

also another great choice is a suhr aldrich, i had one in the bridge of one of my prs and it sounded great.
