i havent had any issues with it yet, ive played it extremely loud with my band about 8 times for around 6 hours each time and had no problems with anything so far

i think with the tube change it does make the amp alot heavier sounding and a bit thicker

i would like to mess around with different preamp tubes in different spots but i dont have as much experience with as many, i just know the tung sols deliver and have never dissapointed me

do you recomend any tubes in certain spots?
Cool! Will have to try my Tung-Sols in V3 & V5, if for no other reason than my general dislike towards the Chinese tubes.

The Sovtek LPS is a little darker in nature than many tubes, and I really like it in the phase inverter (V6). It also sounds good in V1 because of how much that slot affects tone, and I like it in V4 as well because that spot helps channel 1 sound a little sweeter. In general, I just like the tube, though you'll need to run your gain a little higher. V2 I've been really happy with Chinese, surprisingly enough. I think it's got to do with the way the Uberschall is voiced that utilizes some of the fizzy characteristics of Chinese tubes. Anyway, I find as long as I pair it with some darker, smoother tubes, it sounds awesome.

With that said, if I could only recommend one thing, it would be to put an LPS in V6!

I'm seeing this word "fizzy" a lot lately. Now, having just come out of a super successful re-tube of my Diezel, I'm thinking MAYBE the UberTJ is next in line. I have no issues - no noise - no microphonics - no pops or crackles...but what I WOULD like from my practically new TJ is a deeper, thicker, richer sound... More of a potent tone. I'm not making this up, the amp kicks ass. But one thing I find is when I move from my Diezel to my TJ, the TJ sometimes sounds papery thin compared to the Diezel. They're BOTH top notch amps - I'm just wondering if I best be moving up to Gold Lion KT88's and a regimen of Tung Sols throughout or just let it fizzle out and then buy new. I'm not some traveling musician who's tone is elemental in my day to day life and success, but I am a stickler for studio recording and jamming.

This has been an ultra-helpful thread.

I just pulled the trigger on 6 new TAD 12AX7 premiums for my preamp section... I'm going to see if these thicken up the sound before going ahead with new KT88's. I'm really impressed with the TADs in my Diezel. So, hell, there ya go.

So the other day I had put in - as I mentioned earlier - Sovtek LPS tubes in V1, V2, V4 and V6 of my Twin Jet, with Chinese in V3 and V5. I've played a little since then, mostly with other people, until this morning. I spent a few hours playing, and after only a short time in, found I was very disappointed with the amp. Recently, I've been playing my 101b a lot because I did a full retube, and it sounds gorgeous, so today when I switched over to the Twin Jet, I was shocked at how loose and undefined it was. I remembered that when I recorded the clips to showcase EL34s in the Twin Jet, I had all Chinese except for V6, so I decided to undo what I had thought I liked so much. The result? Magic.

There's something about the Chinese tubes in V1 - V3 that against all odds, make it much tighter than with other tubes that are known to be less fizzier and more defined. I don't know how the hell it works and I won't try to understand, but I'm starting to think the Twin Jet sounds best with Chinese tubes in these spots. Not only is it tighter and more defined, it just sounds better ; more raw, more aggressive, and very little flub. I've tried Sovtek, JJ, Tung-Sol, NOS, and probably a few others, and I keep coming back to the Chinese. Sure, the PI sounds better with a Sovtek LPS to me, but for all the other spots, I'll be sticking with the stock Chinese.

The issue of fizz.
First off, I feel like the KT88s are inherently more fizzy than the EL34s I have, but not enough to escape the power of the Twin Jet's knobs. What I've noticed is that a lot of people seem to lower their mids and turn up master presence, keeping the treble control in a somewhat "neutral" range. I'm hearing quite a bit of overlap between the master presence and the mids control, so what I would suggest to anyone finding the amp too fizzy is that you raise mids and lower master presence until the high end fizz is in check. For me, mids are slightly below noon - maybe 11:30 - and master presence goes anywhere from 11 - 12:00, depending on volume. If it's still fizzy, lower treble! I keep mine at about 10:00, but I think anything under noon should do well to keep fizz in check concerning that knob. With this in mind, I'm finding no problem using the Chinese tubes with gain and channel presence turned way up, while keeping fizz in check. Probably worth mentioning: I go back and forth between a Bogner 4x12 with G12Ms and a Mesa Recto 4x12 with G12T-75s.

Brilliant post - many thanks :salute:

TAD are Chinese in production, maybe I'll hit the nail on both heads with these... I'll write my report after a week or use and burn in. It's been said time and time again that TJ's rock with Chinese preamps. My concern was that there's some fizz, and I will take your recommendation to action. In the meantime, I do have a small army of TADs coming in the mail. I suppose if they suck ultimately, I can always keep them as back up for my Diezel and go back to Chinese.

Peace,
V.

NOTE: Antique Electronic Supply actually sells TADs that are RE-BRANDED Premium Select Chinese, NOT the high quality Mullard style that thetubestore.com sells. This would explain why they're so much cheaper :student:

So, after all this - I'm still getting top quality Chinese unlike the true TAD/Mullard style I managed to install in my Diezel :aww: For inquiring minds, the reason I didn't go with thetubestore and their TRUE TAD preamps was a) AES seemed way cheaper and b) thetubestore.com is currently sold out

FAAAAAK!
