songs or techniques...let me know im looking for some practice ideas...all styles, turn me onto sumthin new. at this tme im practicing Tempting Time by Animals as leaders

I'm working on timing mostly. I only recently bought a metronome, and it's been helping me a ton. I'm not any sort of solo player, so my rhythm better be in the pocket.

Really practicing on getting the picking as precise as I can on the song (not the intro licks). It's not incredibly difficult but I swear my right hand covers three times as much territory as Paul's...his right hand barely moves while he's picking.

We are currently learning/polishing these songs.......

Hair of the Dog - Nazareth
Ride the Lighting - Metallica

Trying to learn a couple of new songs every week to broaden the library.

Right now I'm working on some of the exercises on Paul Gilberts Intense Rock DVD

The last few days I have been working on Mr. Scary.

It is actually a somewhat easy song to play. Just a bunch of riffs thrown together.

You are absolutely right. Once I dove into and didn't just noodle with it, I realized what it really was. I have been working on getting the full arrangement down memorized and tightening up transitions and creating my own licks for it.

I spend about 20 minutes working on speed, even though I never seem to get any faster. Been working out of a Texas Blues book that's got licks from Gibbons, SRV, Eric Johnson, Johnny Winter, etc. Very cool book. I love the Guitar Techiniques magazine too. I work out of that a good bit. It's like having several private teachers. I'm also working on a program called fretboard logic that teaches the CAGED system. I'm hoping this will help me with my chord knowledge, which is pretty pathetic considering how long I've been playing.

Hey Joe and Sweet Home Alabama note for note. Both of these songs have simple chord patterns but each verse and chourus are played completely different each time with different licks throughout. Note for note each one is a little bit of a pain but a great exercise. Luther Dickinson has the lessons for them on You Tube and it was an eye opener to say the least. If you think you got these seemingly simple songs licked. Think again. Check it out for those interested, great classic licks you can use anytime.

Alternate picking accuracy and divisions with accents. 3's, 4's, 5's, 6's, 7's, 8's...This I can never get enough of.
Then I practice my sweep picking after I can alternate pick it. I screw around with 2 note per string arps as in the major7/minor7, 9th, 11th, 13th...Then a few chords with some melody(this is music BTW!! lol!!) Basic practice is done!

I'm learning this song right now to play with the band...we don't have a keyboard player but the other guitarist in my band can do the keyboard parts. Cool song and is excellent to get your alt picking tight!

I have the same issue. My picking hand has much more movement than his does.

(sounds retarded, but): Playing through songs all the way. 99.9% of our brains seem to want to stop within 60 seconds of playing anything when we're in practice mode. When we force ourselves to play all the way through songs more often.....we master the art of dealing with tone/gear issues, comfort levels, boredom and tuning problems on the fly throughout the song.....which I think is far more noticeable to an audience than the micro stuff we enjoy obsessing on.

Pantera This Love, the riff starting @ 2:50 into the song. My homework this week due on Thursday. This is a pick hand exercize...special emphasis on correct plam muting articulation and string skipping.
