In researching it, I've heard it could be tricky at less than full volume (or without wearing headphones) as you hear the strings in the other tuning. Any thoughts there?
When I am learning a new song, I tend to play at lower volumes.

Yes at bedroom volumes, you're gonna hear the physical tuning of the strings on top of the detuned tuning and that can mess you up. But I got used to it. I guess it affects others more than some.
Just picked up my main guitar from my Luthier and asked what he suggested for the Eb/C# tuning.
He said he would either set it at C# or D. The reason being something about the tension issues if you set it at EB and then tune down to C#. Its better to set at C# and tune up (neck tension-wise). But he thought probably set to D would work fine, so you got 1 half step between each tunings. Obviously won't be perfect intonation but should be able to move between both...until I buy another guitar. HAHA
