It's funny because this has always been the case with polyphia, it's just now its more obvious because the aesthetics and audio match what was going on behind it

Those are some of the worst sounding guitars and drums I've heard in a rock context. Is this rock? Seems like they would've just been better off using a synth for everything.

They don't need a real synth. And anyway, that would require learning how to play an instrument. A simulation of a synth would do the trick.
