What would Malcolm do?

Say you're going to be Malcolm in an AC/DC tribute band and you can't even find much less afford a Gretsch Malcolm signature double jet...what would you do?

I'm looking at the current production Electromatic double jet, it's affordable and has Filtertrons, but it's got a Bigsby...any other ideas? Can this be modded to a wraparound bridge without much trouble? Are the Filtertrons in this guitar even in the same ballpark tonewise?

Say "Fu#$ It" and play a Gibson SG. They are similarly shaped, at least to non-guitar folk, and people will presumably be there to hear AC/DC tunes - not critique whether you are playing the exact same gear...

Or a Les Paul.. who really cares. Get the right pups in there and play an amp with some good drunch and cut and you are good to go. Only musicians care about tone and half of them can't even decide what is good so really, no issues..

I care. I don't want to be just another cover band that plays all AC/DC songs, I want to capture the feel of the band. I'm an AC/DC aficionado myself, and I've seen some poor AC/DC tributes, and I don't like when I see them half-ass it.

I've got the amp, the tone, and the chops...but I'm only halfway there.

You can find some cheaper Gretches without a Bigsby used. Even a single cutaway would work. Gut the thing and throw in a TV Jones and you'd be good to go. Or just leave it stock. May sound just fine.

Look for used Dearmond M75's and the like. I played one a long time ago and it had the Gretchy kinda tone.

I'm playing a bill with an AC/DC tribute band in a few weeks and one of the guitar players palys a BC Rich through a Blues Jr. Can't get much farther than that. Sounds just fine.

there's one on ebay for 1500 bin?

Saw that one, but not in a position to grab it at that price...less than a year ago, you could get those used for around $1000.

My 2 cents is to stay OCD and save untill you can get the guitar you want.

Unless you can flip whatever bandaid you get for break even, or profit. you'd just be spending a dollar trying to save a dime.

make due with what you've got, untill you can get what you want.

Yup....stick to your guns. Sell off any less used gear and buy the one you want or you will be kicking yourself later for not doing it.

I can live with that...the MY signature would be ideal, and if a 2910 becomes available somewhere, that will be close enough without the hassle of modding anything. In the meantime I've got something that will get me by for a show or two...thanks for the input...

There were two times where a cover band doing AC/DC really grabbed my attention due to how well they nailed the tone. Both times the guys were playing JMPs and both times they were using P-90 equipped guitars (one a LP Jr and the other an old LP Custom). You should be able to score a newer Jr on the cheap...a dbl cut would even give you a similar look.

just play something like this

P90's huh? Never would have figured. But I like the look of a double cut Jr, I think I could make that work. I'll have to see if I can try one out locally and give it a listen...thanks!

Maybe get into a payment plan for the real deal - a lot of shops are hurtin', so this ain't a bad idea in the big scheme of things. Just sayin'... Cake and eat it too
