I bought one of those 40th anniversary DS-1's with the black chassis and gold knobs because I thought it would be cool to have around. However, I'd forgotten how bright, harsh, and metallic that pedal is. One thing I noticed is that even when bypassed, it makes my tone sound subtly thinner, plinkier (onomatopoeia), and has a flatter feel. Like 14 years ago, I got my DS-1 modded by Keeley and it came back kind of vanilla. It lost too much of whatever it had before and had a more generic character. Way better in terms of controls and quality of distortion, just didn't sound like a DS-1 anymore.
By the way, I've noticed that I don't really like the bypass of BOSS pedals. How I know this for sure is because I bought a couple of Wazacraft pedals and the bypass was WAY better. Has anyone else noticed this?
So anyway, I want to get this pedal modded, but I want something that's flexible and useful, but with lots of character. What mod would you recommend? I've heard of many, including Keeley, Analogman, Monte Allums, and several which have poppe up on Ebay and Reverb over the years. Who is offering the best mods?
