I'm starting some heavy dropped tuned rock/metal records and now I have the recto, what's the ultimate guitar to go with it for heavy tight drop tuned rhythms? Ala Alterbridge, Nickelback, 3 Days Grace etc... As they say in LA 'The KROQ' sound.

I'm a Paul guy but what are other options?

Which guitar? PRS? Ibanez? Schecter? Musicman?
Model?
Pickups?
Wood?

Thanks in advance.

take your pick

I believe the Paul would do a great job :) Maybe with EMGs or Duncan Blakcouts? Heck, you could try out a PRS Tremonti pickup in an LP, Tremonti`s signature model is quite thick, so I can`t imagine the difference that big.

wouldn't stink :D

I am with this guy. I love Suhr guitars.

When he mentioned heavy tight drop tuned rhythms i wouldn't recommend a Suhr. I think he already has it covered with a Les Paul. Most Superstrats just won't touch a LP for heavy thick tones.

Other than that, Gibson V's, Explorers, PRS 245,250.

i was thinking the same thing but since he doesn't have a superstrat, this might be a mice texture to add some sting to a track.

an SG is also cool.

Thanks guys.

I'm an old school guy when it comes to guitars; Pauls, Teles, 335 etc... So I sometimes wonder if I'm missing the boat when I see PRS a lot on videos. Honestly know nothing about any of these guitars what is it about the PRS that makes so many guys play them? How do they differ sound wise to a Les Paul?

Can't lose with a LP with some hot pickups. The new duncan actives are supposed to be great...

But a PRS singlecut would rule as well.

If you dig Les Pauls then I say stick with them because every PRS Ive played didn't do it for me and they most certainly do not sound like a LP. Im not saying that they wouldn't work for you but that is just my findings and Ive played some killer PRS guitars and some that should have been set out for firewood.(same cabe be said about some LP's ive played..not bagging on PRS!) As far as how the differ from a LP, They have more coil tapping options going on with the pickups. They are decent guitars but Id take a Paul over it any day. Im in agreance with everyone else that maybe you should stick with a Paul and just throw in some hotter pickups.

all the best

I have a Duncan Custom 5 in my main Paul, something hotter then that?

And when you say hotter do you mean more output or more distorted?

It can be both hotter or more distorted although the Custom 5 is pretty hot!!

I think that's why people are recommending EMg's or the balckouts because they are hotter and put out more o/p. They also have more mids then the custom 5. I find the C5 to be a bit scooped sounding but that's just me (I love that pickup by the way)

Another thing is what I would do is just use your LP and maybe hit the front end of the amp with a clean boost a bit or an EQ. It might sound overkill but when you try it, it should put a smile on your face lol :D

So to acheive the sound I'm going after do you think I need a pickup with more midrange the my Cunstom 5?

I think so. The PRS pickups are ALL MIDS in my humble opinion.

Or you could hit the front of the amp with an EQ with the mids goosed. It will save you the hassle of a Pickup change!!

James... i use a Duncan Custom 5 in my main LP, and in my other one, for heavier stuff, a Duncan custom (with the ceramic magnet).

Now I know there's plenty of ceramic haters out there. ANd I was one of them. But the Duncan Custom into that recifier will rip, dude. It's the same coil windings as a Custom, but it has more mids and is crunchier overall and more aggressive. But still in the same ballpark.
