I've been playing a Racto for a while that I love, I believe it's a rev G 2 channel Dual. I heard a clip the other day of a 2 channel Rev F and thought it sounded insane, also heard a triple Rev G that I really liked and pre 500 that I thought was nasally. Which model/rev do you guys like most for modern rock?

Mesa is the old Ford /Chevy debate... Not much in the Boogie camp I give a Sh!+ about. Maybe because of the D Bags who pretend to play them. Just an generic example here.

I tend to like the revision F 2 channels. Which clip did you hear that you liked the other day, could you post a link?

Hi James
I think the one you had during the Hi Gain Amp Shootout sounded amazing!
I've got a 2 Ch Rev F that I like a lot. I thought a lot about trying the other Revs, but decided to go a different route. Like you, I use my amps mostly for recording, and a good sounding 2 Ch Recto is already enough.
What I've done was getting a few different set of speakers, like V30s, Scholz, EVM12l, Greenbacks, 50w cast frame and Crescendo form Fane, C90s, etc...
I've found the 2 Ch DR an amp that seems to be picky about speakers, but it turns out that I've been recording it with pretty much all the spk combos above!
With the Scholz it kind of sounds a bit weird at first, but a few minutes adjusting the mics and bam! You get a smooth, still tight sound, with a low mid growl that you won't find anywhere else. One of the meanest tones I've ever heard.
The only other Recto I'm thinking about now is the new one. Maybe a Triple would make for a good brother of the one I already have, and sound different enough to justify having both.
All the best James!!!

I haven't played all the revisions but I know my Triple Rec sounds killer. I'm amazed that an amp that sounds so immense also has such an incredible slicing top end. It slays.

thanks man, it was my Racto.

James - you've got a great recto - you would be hard pressed to try and find something better

FWIW i really enjoy the tremoverbs. Simple design, and great cleans + lead. Hard to beat

I also like the recto-reborns - much more than the roadsters. They really did a great job on them

I have owned a Rev. E, Rev. G, FJA 3 Channel and now a Multi-Watt.

My favorite has been the Rev. G. In the 2 Channel Rectos, different tubes go a very long way. I preferred Chinese in the preamp section (OE were Chinese as well) and some Electro-Harmonix 6L6 in the power section with GZ34 rectifier tubes (Which is what the earliest Rectos shipped with). Tight, aggressive and huge sounding.

The Rev. E had an insane amount of presence (which is common with all of the early revision Rectos). If you want pre-500 tones, just crank your presence. Seriously.

Here is an example of that tube combination I mention with my Rev. G.

I preferred the REV G over the F's if the intent is that classic recto heavy wall of sound. To me, the G's are the first revision to crystalize the tone we have come to know as the Recto.

cool

Been messing around with the Racto today and getting some great sounds, changing some settings and mic placement.

Does anyone know what year and rev it is: R-004246?

Out of the few that I've owned, I prefer my Rev.F rackmount. It just seems to sit best and I can still get smooth and straight ahead rock tones or big crunchy monster sounds =)

Mid-1994. Right before they transitioned to detachable power cords, large Mesa logo, etc.

Rev G?

Also is there a site where you can date them?

Yes sir Rev. G.

And no there isn't a site but you can either get an approx. by calling Mesa or opening up your amp and there is a handwritten date inside.

Thanks you've helped me out a few times. We have been messin with this racto all day and getting some killer sounds, I think a fresh set of tubes are gonna take it over the edge. When I got the amp the dude told me the tubes were old and I have been using the hell out of. I think if anything a Triple would be the compliment, something with more headroom for heavy drop tuned rhythms. I wish there was a place to date the revisions, there's 3 = 2 channel triples on ebay. I'm not sure if it's a big difference between a G and an F but I heard some triple rev G clips that were just killer.
