One thing that can help getting the top end/snap to balance across positions is to use a Superswitch and use one set of lugs to assign the tone control(s). Often it balances better if you don't have any tone pot connected for positions 2 and 4 ime.
That said a very simple one that I like is:
Bridge
Bridge+middle
Bridge+neck
Neck+middle
Neck
This gives you very Les Paul-correlated tones in positions 1-3-5 and Strat-like approximations in 2-4.
If there are 3 knobs, then Volume/Tone1/Tone2
where Tone 1 works for switch positions 3 and 5
Tone 2 works for position 1 (ie bridge pickup)
Positions 2 and 4 get no tone pot at all.
