Like the title says, what's that piece you jumped on with the intent to immediately flip, swore you could never bring yourself to love, and inevitably wound up being the one you'll now never let go.

Behold, a plus top in Alpine White burst that was the most heinous hunk of cat litter (you wouldn't believe the piss odor) and cigarette smoke I'd ever encountered. Knobs missing, strings pigtailed around the headstock. You'd have seen it coughing and yelling on an episode of Cops or something hosted by Segall. A few months of sunlight and activated charcoal, along with a much needed neck adjustment and setup - this thing vibrates like the best R0 I've ever touched. With a serial number guaranteed to bring in questions of QC from the most knowledgeable of haters. Sometimes you just get lucky and fall in love with the one you couldn't stand to look at.

never bought any piece of gear looking to sell it
I've got a ton of respect for that. I've always tried to be conscious about how I deal, with the main intent being to never screw over a fellow musician, buying or selling. Gold be the rule.

There was once a time where Texas craigslist held some serious treasure.

Austin craigslist still has quite a few nice pieces of gear on it, especially if you need a nice SF Fender amp. A lot of nice guitars up there right now too but prices are kinda unrealistic but I suppose a cash offer might snag one. I got into horns last fall and I picked up a decent condition vintage '53 Conn cornet with the original case and two mouthpieces, one of which is a Mt Vernon Bach, for $150. Real value is probably in the $5-600 range. They had it listed correctly as a cornet, but failed to mention trumpet/flugelhorn in the ad so it was basically hidden for five months since cornets aren't very popular in the US anymore.

Snagged the VHT from a forumite around the time of the HCAF exodus. Had every intention of flipping it; not necessarily for the cash but I was certain that I’d get bored with it, once my curiosity was satisfied.

That was nearly 20 years ago now…

Was it more about "it does what I expected so well" or "it does way more than I expected"? Love it when that happens.

Maybe 10-12 years ago I bought a PRS CE24 not really with the intent of flipping it, but I wanted to branch out from super strats and try a different shape. I thought I could sell if I didn’t like it and was pretty sure I’d be selling it. Still have it.
I got it for around $1500 new with discounts from Sweetwater and thought it was too damn expensive at the time.

That's a cool one. I've never owned a PRS, but a 90s bolt-on CE24 would be the only model I'd hunt down. It's the bare essentials I want in a guitar.

I follow through. Everything I've intended to flip has been flipped.

Mine is my Mesa Mark V. It was too good of a deal to pass up, even though I had a bad Mark IV that soured my opinion on Mesa Marks. That was just an old dud. I should have recapped that and kept it, but I sold it to my girlfriend (at the time).

I guess knowing how Mesa Mark EQs work helped me out with this Mark V. I dialed it in and kept it. I'm not flipping any more Mesa gear.

I never bought anything with the intent of flipping, but i have bought a VHT Sig:X twice and a Victory Kraken twice. Made money both times, but the cash wasn't as good as the amps were.

Same. I haven't bought anything with the intent to flip. I haven't sold much either. Traded a few things in, old modelers that were really just to play with backing tracks at the computer. Oh and sold a G12T75 for cheap for a guy doing speaker trials.

Anymore, it seems like most interpret the golden rule as "he who has the gold, makes the rules".
