Which do you guys perfer for close mic recording, a 4X12 or a 2X12...why?

Actually,

I think I like a thiele 1x12 loaded with a Weber Ceramic Blue Dog in a compartment under the stairs.

I used to use my VHT 4x12 in a big room, but it sounded different every time I recorded it.

+1000000

1x12 is the way to go, less bass mush to deal with.
also less interferance and phasing issues

isolated as well

I have had much better luck recording my 2x12 over my previous 4x12. I don't have 2 1x12's, since I run in stereo, that would be ideal.

From my latest recording session, I think I've learned that "chest thumping massive low end thunk" is really, REALLY over-rated when tracking/recording guitars. And just does NOT translate to a recording well.

If you look at your wavelengths in protools after tracking a cab with massive bass, you'll see how grossly uneven the palm-muted parts are, in relation to the open strummed chords. All that low end causes nothing but trouble in the mixdown. Masks the bass guitar, muddies up the low end, confuses the heck out of the limiter.

I got a 1x12 cab specifically for recording in my 3x3' recording iso-booth. Sounds big and tight, but not 4x12 huge, in open air. On tape, it sounds SUPER punchy, and probably the most pro sound I've achieved so far, even before any EQ.

For the low end, just let the bass guitar do it's job. Make sure it's tight and linked up to the kick. Perhaps highpass anything above 60-80hz to give the kick it's space, and bump up the 250-400 range. Let the bass guitar give you the "thump and thunk", and let the guitar sit in that midrage and do the face tearing.

Hmmm...I think I see a 1X12 cab in my near future. I also see that Avatar has a 1X12 unloaded cab for $189.00. What do you guys like?

I'm using a 1x12 that's 25W x 18T x 11Deep.

I wasn't THAT impressed with smaller cube sized 1x12s.

Those avatar's are supposed to be fantastic.

That's the one... I've heard great reviews on that cab. That has enough internal space to give SOME thunk, just like my cab.

I can get the cab loaded with on of the following for an extra $44.00:

Celestion Vintage 30, G12H30, G12T75, Greenback, Classic Lead 80, Hellatone 30, Hellatone 60 , G12K100

I'm leaning toward the Hellatone 60:

"We start with a stock great sounding classic 60 watt Celestion Vintage 30. We convert it into a Hellatone by aging it slightly and by exercising the suspension for 15 hours so when you get it, it has a warmer tone on the very first note. These two aging processes warm up the low end and smooth out the midrange slightly. The Hellatone model 60 really projects and is great for all kinds of music..especially Rock and Metal! Large Heavy 50 oz magnet 60 watts 8 ohm or 16 ohm. For specs, go to celestion.com ...click on 'classic' speakers, vintage 30 speaker."

Well, you're leaning the wrong way. The Htone 60 still sounds like a V30.

the order I'd go with those choices:

Classic 80
G12K100
G12T75
Greenback
Hella 30
G12H30
Hella 60
V30

OK, why?

My little Bogner Cube sounded much better than the OS 1x12 Avatar FWIW.

V30's sound spikey and bad in a 4x12.

They sound 4x as bad in a 1x12.

take the upper mid spike, and put the full power of an amp into one of them = directional, in your face, crunchy hell.

That's just my opinion though. We all have different ears.

I just think the smooth response of the CL80 lends itself to the already inherently directional nature of 1x12's.

I had a Hella 60 in a small 1x12 that just had the worst sound of anything I've ever heard. Then, I threw in an EV Force, and it was like a light went on.

If I went with the greenback should I be worried about blowing the single speaker with my XTC?

If you're just recording, I don't think it would be a problem.

I play 115 watts into a 30 watt Weber Blue Dog in a 3/4 open back Pacific 1x12.

When you don't crank it, it's not utilizing full power.

I would just go ahead and give it a try.

Yeah, I dig the sound of greenbacks but was worried about it handling the power. Meh, I think I'll get one any way.

Hey, I had a brainstorm (fart.) What If I found a way to cover over three of the seakers in a 4X12 cab to cut back on the bass in the room as well as some of any possible phasing issues? Whould there be any possible benefits to doing that?

I've got 3 4X12 cabs loaded with various speakers. It seems like such a waste to not be able to use those existing cabs.

That, or you could try enclosing the mic in a tube or something, so that it doesn't hear the other speakers.

I'm sure it would at least sound somewhat interesting.
