some of the items of the past that exploded due to internet frenzy:

zendrive
el capistan
jvm
charvels
axe-fx
klon
keeley comp
friedman mods
holmes pickups

and of course dumble and trainwreck!

what else?

The best bit is when the honeymoon is over you see them filling the classifed shortly after the hype machine dies down. That can't be beat.

Engl Powerball back in the mid 2000's on HCAF.

Splawn Quickrod in 2006-7.

Oh my god, I remember that one. ALL German boards were full of Powerball hype.
After about 12-18 months the consensus was: Clean channel too sterile, Lead too compressed and off they went.

Let's see about the Kemper. It's great...the profiling is AMAZING...but it's still not a finished product.
I hope they get the firmware up to the advertised specs soon. It also needs a rig managment software or USB keyboard driver.

JCM 800s - these were cheap and plentiful before everyone wouldn't shut up about them.
Suhr Guitars - and deservedly so (great stuff)
Driskill Guitars-bought an underground custom killer guitar from a local builder back in 2000, and then the guy gets backordered 10 years thanks to PRS/TGP.

Looks like Kemper is goin viral, least round these parts...
when line 6 first came out with the axys or whatever that combo was called, the marketing for it prior to release was basically what the kemper is doing now. but it was funny because they had an ad displaying the original guitar tone waveform and then the modeling waveform, and they were nothing alike!

the marketing guys at line 6 were good at their job. i bought a pod the week it came out.

ps reza i forwarded your information to a friend looking for a soundman locally-

engl makes nice amps..i liked their SE, and steve morse's tone last year at namm was great using the little engl combo he had.

That's what came to mind when I saw the tread title.

It seems like pedals are more likely to go viral than amps or guitars.

WGS speakers were big news when they first came out....

i still haven't played with a timmy but i've heard them on player's boards. not hearing anything out of the ordinary?

Axefx seemed to be the largest viral piece of gear from the past couple of years, so viral it brought tears to some users eyes.

The affordable USA Charvels were the best viral thing to happen, USA made guitars that were great and could be bought by the average wage making person.

Cloners cloning clones of brand name clones is the worst viral trend I have seen.

Question for the OP: Do you mean "viral" in a negative sense, like the products don't deserve the hype or do you mean the hype in general?

I ask this, because I think (from the examples above) the Axe FX, Cameron or /13 amps are great products!

not negative, just observing how powerful the internet is at selling and how "limited" supply creates frenzy--that last bit is the insane part.

the axe II launch almost caused riots. zendrives were $400 on ebay. dc timeline was $700 on ebay. all great products but jeez..
