I have a gibson explorer in black that I got and want to have it painted in silverburst... needless to say, there is probably better options out there then to have it sent back to Gibson and have them charge a ridiculous amount to do this, but its probably not even an option with them. Anyone know a guitar maker out there that would be able to do an amazing job with this, and not try to charge a ridiculous amount for it? I will strip it down and prep it myself to make it as painless as possible if I have to.

Thanks, Chad

I use Marty Bell for paint

You don't even have to strip it, just box it up and send it.

Some of the guitar paint Marty did for me.

That is some fantastic work!!! Im pretty sure he has a picture of a silverburst paint he has done, so Ill just email him about it. Thanks alot you guys!

Marty's finishes are great if you don't mind the polyester/urethane combination.
If you want a nitrocellulose lacquer finish with little plasticizer content like the old days,
it's hard to beat a Dave Johnson finish.

Well, since you brought that up... which one will get me the aging look that the silverbursts usually get after heavy use over time? Is there a finish that wont have that effect on a silverburst... even though it might be desirable to some, it might not be to all. Thanks for the recommendation... I had no idea about different methods of finish on a guitar!

You're talking about weather checking, and nitro lacquer with little plasticizer content is the way to get there. These finishes take time to cure. Polyester/urethane finishes cure very fast, hence the quick turnaround. And they cure very hard, with usually no weather checking happening during the life of the finish.

Ill probably go that route then... I dont care for the checking or weathered finish look down the road anyways. I just sent Marty an email... I have a feeling this wont be my only refinish! Thank you guys for the links so far!!!

Marty does factory finishes as well, including the nitro/poly mix stuff that Gibson uses. I don't think there is any finish Marty does not do.

Mike Learn and Dan Lawrence do great work, especially if you want graphics.

Damn... Mike Learn is very VERY tempting to pick just based on his custom work alone!!! Very bad ass work! I wonder how much it cost to get custom paint from him?

dont go cheap with the paint or painter. if the guitar is a keeper, spend the bucks to get good paint from a competent painter. this is a lesson learned the hard way after at least 10 custom paint jobs. no more amateurs for me.

I've always used Daneen Bronson at http://www.customairbrush.com She does AWESOME work and has very reasonable prices too. She does work for the Jackson Custom Shop too.

I've had 5 painted by her.

This is a cool one.
