I have a modded Eggie Seminar head with a JCM800 circuit and need 4 new preamps tubes.

It's a bright, aggressive amp, and very high gain. I need to tame the brightness a bit, but want good punch and clarity.

V1 - V4: JJ's / Tung Sol / Mullard RI / Sovtek LPS (PI) ???

What do you recommend? Thx!!

Will look for an RfT.

Was thinking

V1 (preamp) - JJ
V2 (preamp) - Tung Sol
V3 (FX loop) - 12AT7 or 12AU7 ??
V4 (PI) - 12AX7 or 12AT7 ??

Thanks!!

I would go all Tung Sol in the preamp...to tame the brightness, I would look at a speaker change.

Tung Sols are pretty balanced. They have a decent amount of treble and won't really tame brightness. I'd try JJ ECC83s in the first 3 slots, and an ECC81 (12AT7) in the PI.

yup.

definatley a jj ecc83s in v1

but maybe nos rca in v2 etc.

every high gain head I have ever had ...loved a low gain preamp tube in the v1 hole

Agreed.... JJ in V1, Chinese Gens 12ax7 in the rest.

And I would look at speakers... Greenbacks will help smooth things out. Also play with treble and roll it back to smooth things out but don't 'blanket' the amp. Good luck

So no 12at or 12au 7 for the effects loop nor PI?

Thanks, guys!
