is there a reason you're typing with the number zero representing the alphabetical "o"? a new keyboard is like $10 at the cheapest level, sometimes free at yardsales.

why don't you wait until you get the quickrod and spend some time with it. You'll probably love it but who knows. If you must sell now it seems clear that the 5153 must go.

Yes my letter o is broke 0n 0ne 0f my c0mputers, I have a brand new Mac deskt0p but use my lapt0p while laying ar0und which is als0 0nly 6 m0nths 0ld and this is the sec0nd time s0mething br0ke and
I sent it back and d0nt feel like sending it again f0r just 0ne letter, s0rry it b0thers u

Keep the Splawn (you just got it) and the Orange (in case you sell the Splawn). Lose that POS 5153 and continue your search for the perfect amp.

Keep the Orange. I would keep the EVH for the lead channel at least, but if that's all you are going to use it for then that's an awful expensive amp to have around just for that.
I was just playing quiet riot's mental health on channel 3- 5 minutes ago and it sounded great. I tried it on channel 2 and it stunk. Tried it on channel 1 with a suhr riot in front and it sounded alright (gain was pretty low on the pedal). Its a shame how nice channel 3 sounds. You're absolutely right.

I think I might like to check out an OD100 SE+ as an EVH replacement as well. I don't know if it has the same godly kind of gain though.

Sell them all and go buy a good amp, like a Bogner 20th Anniversary XTC or a Diezel Herbert. Covers it all, and then some.

Steve
+1

Another +1. The 20th XTC does it all...short of modern metal...although it can come close. The VH4 would be another good choice.

Yeah "good" amp... :emofag: :grim: :lame:

Hey sell your piece of crap $1800 and get a $4k amp... that's the only way you can be kewl...

I can't speak for the 5153 and only have limited time with the Orange so I couldn't tell you if it would suit what you need, but the Splawn can do 2 out of 3 requests. The clean is going to be pretty good, but nothing to write home about. Then again, I'm not sure the 5153 and Orange have killer cleans either.

Oh yeah, if you want a clean channel maybe you can get an old fender or a Dr Z or something to use just for the clean.

If you want, keep the Orange for the sludge, the Splawn for the 80s metal/2203-ness, and sell the 5153 in favor of something with great cleans. Used Fender, or Dr. Z, or hell a Rivera; I had a Jake that had mindblowingly great cleans and damn good Super Lead-like OD.

They don't cost enough.

I was just saying that I'd trade for a diezel. Not that anyone would, but it doesn't hurt to ask.If I can find one used, I might be able to put a little cash on top of the EVH~ Who knows~

Ross,
The Knucklehead is a good way to go, maybe a Venus, or like I threw out, the Jake/Rake series...all have great cleans, and different OD flavors depending on what you want. Fandangos are great too, again a different flavor, but all can be had for a song and a dance second hand.

Look, if I can speak to you from the heart, you see a lot of people here with super expensive amps. That's great, and I'm happy for their damn awesome collection. However, when they recommend super-expensive amp X, and tell you its what YOU REALLY NEED, I assure you it's not. You're two thirds really happy with your rig, right, and just want one tone that your amp collection doesn't support, right? Will a Diezel do sludge like your Orange does? I've never played a Diezel, so I can't tell you, but the Orange is kinda the standard for that, so I dunno that a Diezel will do all the things your current rig does BETTER. I like economy of motion. I like replacing the part that doesn't work with one that does, and not going for a full, costly rig-overhaul just because dudes with disposable income out the yin-yang tell me that I need a $4k amp flippantly. Unless that's what you really want, mind you, in that case, hock the lot of them and get spendy.

So, if you're asking me, sell the 5153, pick up an amp that does great cleans and perhaps offers something else too. Sorry it took so long to get to it ;)

although it does not hurt to ask this is true, this is also not HCAF - alot of insane rigs here and guys who know what they are worth. not saying no-one would want to trade with an EVH, but you said "even trades only" which is pretty far fetched unless you want a broken VH4. you are still looking at ~$2,000 on top of the EVH to get into VH4 territory. if you consider that a little cash then you probably wouldnt be complaining about owning 3 heads right now because of money problems. just going by what im reading here on the forum man and nothing else :dunno:

as far as the rivera's go - they sound great but nothing close to the EVH. good or bad that could go either way for you

grooveht also makes a great point. fix what is broken, and if its not broken dont fix it

expensive does not guarantee great tone. i reiterate this all the time. ive been shocked more times than i care to count with what people dont have and get sounds out of, then what people DO have and get sounds out of. one head that might do things great versus 3 heads that do 3 things great is still getting the end result, and without the overhead of massive upfront costs.

Great cleans and searing rhythm and leads. I don't really even use a third channel for solos. I just keep playing on my searing rhythm channel- maybe hit a boost if I really need it.

When you said Jake, I wasn't familiar with it. I thought you were referring to a person as I had no clue about the amp. I'll check it out.

And you're right about the money thing. I have a little Vox Night Train and it sounds terrific and didn't cost very much either. It's just that some of the amps I like the tone of, do cost a lot, like the Triamp or the OD100 or Soldano's. So When I replace the EVH, I don't know- I guess the question is, Do I look at getting a multi channel head like a Decatone or a H&K, or do I split my money (maybe even save a little) and get something like a Rivera and a fender?

Thanks for the response, I glad you understand where I'm coming from.

Honestly, I'm not looking to spend $2k on top of the evh. I'll probably be looking in the low $2000 range. I've thought that maybe I can scrap together a little extra here and there if I hold out for the right amp. One of the original reasons I got the EVH was because it wasn't super expensive, but it had decent tone and was very versatile. I don't have a disposable income to spend on a monster rig.

I've never played a Diezel, but from the clips I've heard, I do like the VH4's 3rd and 4th OD channel. The other 2 channels make it well rounded, but I'm not sure if I could even afford a used one. So I've been looking at various amps that would really fall into my price range a little better and are used (TriAmp, OD100, Soldano Decatone, Kasha, Rivera's ect)

I did take down the direct trades only thing. That may have been a bit juvenile of me.
