Had about six Herberts since they were introduced. Last sold a new one about 3-4 weeks ago. Used to dig them but now I cannot stand them. Way too compressed and sterile. The M90 is a far better amp.
Was it any different than the earlier ones you had?

M90 do 7 string ranged stuff?

Didn't you say that 4 Herberts ago ?

  Probably!! I keep thinking that I love it, Hell I named my dog Diezel, and yet every time the Herbert has no staying power for ME. I think I prefer the VH4 and Einstein but I have been through a bunch of them as well.. The Elmwood has been here almost 2 years now.

Cool, I'm just busting your balls :D Buying/selling that much must be tough on the pocketbook !

might as well throw Cornford in with those also!

and maybe the Suhr OD100 SE+?

i liked all of those you listed on the first try, except the VH4, and now like the VH4 after hearing it with deferent tubes.

guess the Herbert would be my pick from your list. the Herbert probably covers the most bases, good feel, good clean, lots of sounds, etc.?

there's a M90 for $2800 at Hugeracks.
I am hoping to find something that will handle my 7 string low range. That is one area none of my current amps are good at. The OD100 sounds nice but I think it might be too close to what I have already.

In that case definitely the Herbert

Rackmount Dual Rectifier. Listen to King's X Dogman album, imho some really awesome drop tuned guitar tones. Case closed. :)

Boogies don't do it for me at all. I played a ton of Rectos, MKI, Tremoverb and owned a IIC+.....they feel awful to play thru.

Why do I shop at the Ranch again when the owner has no clue about amps...................................

How about one of the new Uberschalls?
Any different than the earlier ones. I had a first version and hated it. Went for an XTC and didnt' like it or Shiva. They feel really mushy to me.

There is a new amp in development that I heard two nights ago,
that would definitely be one to contemplate.

Won't be available for a while but it is gonna be quite an attention grabber.

SCARY chug factor!

Mark my fellow Canuck and Indie lover , how was the trip back? I'm gonna have to disagree on that one. The OD100SE+ is definitely a different animal than the Modern Classic but by no means is it more "modern sounding" The tone controls on the Modern Classic are ultra responsive and it is very easy to get modern or metal type sounds just using the mid and treble controls. The Modern Classic is also a REALLY tight amp with a lot of bottom on tap when dialed in right and it has the drop D thing covered in spades. They are not amps that are meant to be played at bedroom volumes but turn it up and .......stand back!!
I don't find my Modern all that tight. It's not a "loose" amp, but my Metal is much tighter. The Modern is much more laid back sounding, more of a hard rock / classic rock tone. Nice amp though.

I don't know man, I love my Wizard, it can get metal-ish with some work, but its not a plug in and play metal machine at all IMO.

Mine either.....the Metal, that's a different story.

Maybe Rick changed the specs on the MC since yours was made. The MC's now ALL have the push pull gain boost that you say your Metal has and my Modern Classic has about the same amount of gain as pretty much any one of my other amps you see in my sig. If you say your's sounds like your 69 plexi, then it sounds more like the Vintage Classic specs of now. I find it easy to dial in the more "modern" sounds with my MC. Not only that but it gets a pretty good sound at extremely low volumes if I back off the treble and presence and dial in the mids to the volume I'm playing at. The Wizard is also the tightest amp of all the amps I own.

Yeah Rick built mine for me just before he started the current line. The Push Pull was something I had him do on mine and then it became a standard feature...pretty cool. Its a different high gain circuit than on my Metal. My MC has more gain than the Vintage Classic. My Metal has alot more.

The plexi I have is one of the great ones, so its a compliment the MC sounds like it.... :)

Still...I'm going to check with him. I'll see him on Saturday. Like I said, my MC has pretty much as much gain as my SLO or my Ecstasy Classic and it gets endless sustain at a pretty low volume. The upper mid harmonics are what really freaks me about that amp. It is harmonically richer than all the rest of my amps.

Have you tried a 5153 George? I loved the punchy, tight low end of the red channel for modern stuff. A very under rated amp IMO.

Did he soup up yours? Most guys I know that have these don't think of them as high gain amps, at least by todays standards. I'll have to check and see on the OT. I got it right about the time he worked out the new transformers from MM.
Tell him George from Guitar Ranch said hello.

Mine has about the same gain as the XTC Blue channel..but sounds way better of course. Don't get me wrong, this is an awesome amp. Not a gain monster....but enough for me though.

I need to get ahold of Rick and get some of the new speakers to try. My Wiz 2-12 is empty. :)

Maybe this will give you an idea where I'm coming from....

Modern Classic This was dialed in more like the album's tone. At least my attempt anyway.

Metal

modded plexi

No I've not tried one of those. I'm pretty anti Fender though.

Thats what I suspected, mine is more souped up than that as it has considerably more gain than XTC Blue ch. I guess Rick made it as metal as he could, given the circuit. The Megadeth clips sound great BTW; I still have them on my computer :)

Just a thought, you seem to really like several of the amps you have or had. Have you ever thought about one of those Rivera Los Lo Bottom sub set-ups. Just add that low end chug to your current rig.

http://www.rivera.com/products/powsub/sub2.php
No never thought about one of those. The power sections in my current amps aren't up to the low range.... :(
The power sections of your amps will do just fine. These subs are self powered (500 watts on the 2x12 cab). The sub connects to the loop (or speaker out) of your amp. I like the idea of the loop option so those low frequecies never make it to the amps power section. It basically uses an internal crossover to remove those really low frequencies from your amps power section which will keep it tight sounding. The sub handles all of those really low tones in a tight, high headroom package. There are controls on the sub that allow fine tuning your sound. Whats nice about this setup is that it gets it's sound from the amps preamp section, so it sounds like your amp, just the lower range of it. Plus it's movable from amp to amp.
