Let's say you had the cash and the choice.

Pick your favourite of the amps below - I've got some decisions to make!

1. Cornford Hellcat
2. Late 70's to early 80's Marshall 2204
3. Marshall 1987
4. Friedman Smallbox

Bear in mind I already own a SLO, vintage AC30 and Mesa MKIII.
I'm after something old school for 70's rock.
If the Cornford didn't do old school rock so well it would be an easier decision!

Then a late 70s Marshall all the way.

2nd best, the Hellcat.

Just MHO, YMMV.

I've got a '74 JMP and that's the tone you're looking for right there. Add a LarMar MV and yore good to go. Another choice is a DR Z Maz. 70's tone all day long.

Smallbox
2 MARSHALLS for 1. Plexi and modded Marshall goodness in one box. And the best series loop in the business.

1987x. I love the Smallbox and want to recommend it, but the 1987x is one of Marshall's absolute best reissues. I deeply regret letting mine go a couple of years ago. It's such an outstanding amp.

2204 or 1987. Both with a boost pedal.
Agreed. The Cornford and Friedman will sound filtered/less raw compared to those vintage Marshalls and given that you have a mark iii and vintage Vox, you're gonna be familiar with that raw, organic sound that few amps made today can match or even come close to
