What's the consensus on the Boss CS3? I have one buried in the "toybox" that I got back in the 80's for it's sustain abilities but have been thinking about adding it to my board for clean tones. Obviously I'll give it a go and hear for myself, but I'm curious as to what others who have used it for cleans think about it.
I like it ....

BYOC 5 knob on 18v. Killed the Ego and the Tone Press in a heartbeat. Costs peanuts.

How do you set yours up for cleans...just looking for a starting point as I'm relatively inexperienced in this regard (I always used it for high gain applications).

I haven't heard clips but Suhr just released the Koji comp on their website. Probably worth check out, it's analog too. 4 knobs (Comp, Level, Mix, Attack) with a voice switch. $200 bucks.

I would say the Keeley Compressor is your best bet, but I don't know much about playing country music

What do you have better about running it at 18V versus 9V? Does the BYOC have less noise than the tone press?

It's got a higher headroom and since it's a Ross based clone, you will not get the distortion at high compression settings. Somehow it's better defined at 18volts.
As for noise it's one of the most quiet compressors, of course depending on your compression levels and where it is in the chain.
I usually place it somewhere in the beginning of the chain. With the "mix" you can make it almost undetectable, but no has such a consistent picking it creates :D

i'm seriously considering the Wampler Ego, it's the industry standard for country guys at the moment.

That makes two of us. Definitely a different direction for me.

I played Country full time from 2000 - 2011 and never used a comp pedal. I used a patch on my Triaxis that barely broke up when you dig in hard & it worked great! The natural compression of the amp about to overdrive was far more expressive than a pedal & it didn't mess with my pick dynamics like pedals did.

That being said, I did experiment with a bunch of high end pedals at one point, and IMO the cheapo Boss was as good as any. I still have that one & the Marshall Edward as well.

I sold mine a long time ago ... can not remember. Sorry .... :)
I have been using a MXR for over a decade.

I was in the same quest recently for a nice compressor. Tried the keeley, DVK the mrs and a few others. I ended up settling for the MXR custom comp. Its virtually on all the time in my rig. Even for distorted tones as well. Really worthwhile trying out in my opinion. Great priced pedal

Lately I've been using the Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone Compressor/Sustainer and I love it. It come's with a neat little grit switch if you want a little dirt under the clean signal. It's been perfect for me.
