man I suck, I cant hear the difference in first 30 seconds.

I like d-n better. It sounds more defined and I think it will cut in a mix better.

D-n sounds like it has more upper mids, while d-a sounds bassier and more focused on the lower mids. I like d-n more for, as noted, I think it will cut through better.

d-a panned hard left
D-n panned hard right!

Love them both!

probably would sound great panned out! but by itself I liked N just a tad better but both very close

both sound good, but I prefer d-n. sounded more open than the other one.

N.

I found 'A' to be a little too rough and borderline harsh. It was really hard and over-the-top percussive. I found it didn't reveal much detail in the finer inside notes and overtones, it was like a claymore to the ears.

With 'N', it seemed scooped a touch, but more bloomy just above in the higher mids. I agree it would sit better in the mix, but to my ears, the pull back with the scoop allowed some other of the nuanced notes to come out. It wasn't nearly as sledgehammer in my opinion. Still hardcore and in-yer-face, but a touch more refined. More musical.

My 2 cents.

Thanks guys.

It was a vh4 with a 57 and 421. The A were my vintage API 312s and the N were my neves.

That's really interesting. I like the N clip better too. I guess I'm not really that surprised that a simple mic pre change could make that much of a difference. The Neve's sounded like they have better response time. More immediate, and very little sag, at least to my ears.

I liked N better. A seemed to be kind of distorted/overloaded in the low end. N was more solid sounding.
