I must delay buying a guitar , I must buy bigger amp.
Currently I have ht5, and I want something bigger.
I'm interested in XXX and 5150. Which one is better for thrash from 80/90s and for stuff like Pantera ?
I'm huge fan of Gary Holt and I saw in one interview that he mentioned a Triple XXX. I love his tone from exodus , huge , meaty with lot of definition.

What do you think ? I should get Triple XXX or 5150 ?

I personally prefer the Triple XXX to the 5150 etc... I've had one for many years and have been very happy with it. They're built like a tank too!

Thanks for opinion !

I've got few questions about XXX :
-I can swap el34 with 6l6gc ? I mean instantly , without mods ?
-This XXX is auto biasing ?
-How this amp works with pedals like flanger , phaser , wah ?

Either amp would work fine but I personally would go with the XXX/3120 also. Good with or without a boost. I'd say the XXX is a little grittier and a boost will smooth it out a little. You can swap EL34s or 6L6s. There is a little switch that will get it in a safe range. Might not be the ideal bias, but most likely safe. There is a little external bias adjustment knob also so you can dial it up exactly where you want it if you have a bias probe thing. Don't know about pedals with either.

Triple XXX will work well with V30 ? I've got ENGL PRO (frontloaded).

Yes. I thought so. I think the XXX will do a better Pantera-ish tone too. 5150 is a bad ass amp too though.

you may as well throw a Peavey Ultra + into the mix- could actually be a better amp at half the price. Better features, similar tones

I really like my Ultra plus. I like it even better with my bad monkey od & mxr eq added in. You can get some really good tones out of it. You can get a used one for under $300, in fact there was one on craigslist for $150 last week.

If you like hard rock and 80's tone, I would look into them.

If you like the XXX try a JSX. The 6534 is badass too.

I heard the same thing......But man he makes some Killer videos!

OK , I guess I will take XXX.
But here is my question :

There are any recommendation for cab ? Currently I'm playing on ENGL 2x12 PRO (v30) but when I boy the amp , I will probably look after 4x12 cab.
To this moment I know that I love regular V30. There are also the Mesa and Marshall versions which I haven't heard.
I thought about Diezel 4x12 rear/front loaded , Mesa Standard recitifer(oversized), Marshall 1960 Dave Mustaine (I love the design of this cab !) or ENGL 4x12 XXL PRO.

If you're looking for a V30 cab you should also check out Orange. They make a very good cab that sounds killer, comes stock with V30s.

LOL!! I kept watching over and over trying to figure out why this guy was a jerk. Then it hit me. :)

I owned an Ultra Plus for years, a 5150 for something like a couple years, and now a 6505+ (maybe for a couple years so far).

I liked the Ultra Plus a lot, and it had plenty of gain though a "clean" but thin-ish sterile clean -- very similar to what I get with the Rockmaster preamp and Classic 120 power amp or 6505+ cleans, at least definitely useable. But after a while I noticed all that gain sounded overly compressed, and when I compared it to something like a boosted Carvin X100B or boosted Laney AOR 100 Pro Tube Lead, they sounded huge in comparison and more open.

As much gain as the 5150 and 6505+ have, IMO they sound bigger and a bit more "open," as well. IMO the gain rolled back a little on the guitar's volume knob with these amps gives better hard rock/early metal tones whereas the Ultra Plus still sounded a bit too compressed even with the gain turned down a fair amount. I've heard the XXX amps are also very compressed-sounding and are very similar to the Ultra Plus, so I never bothered to try one. Anyway, I'm happy with the 5150 series. 8)

I love Peavey amps, but if you might end up spending much on a 412, it may be worth considering whether more options for possibly even a better amp head first and either a cheaper used but good 412 or saving up for a more expensive one later and see if you'd be happy enough with the Engl cab paired with the amp for the time being.

I prefer the XXX to the JSX. I think Satriani added some cool features, but like the tone of the XXX better. and yes they like V30's.

They're not auto biasing. I use a bias probe and a fairly cheap meter. The ultra may be a little cheaper, I'd still go with the XXX for the benefit of having a 3rd channel.
