Hey guys! Ok time to see who has the best ears. :) So my metal band has plans to start recording songs for our first album in a few weeks! One big decision I have to make is which guitar to use for rhythm tracking, so I decided to do some samples in a mix to how different options sit. The re-amping will be easier because we're recording into a DI, but the guitar has to be chosen out of the gate! So, what I did here is laid out some samples in a mix of the two guitars I'm deciding between, and also laid out 3 different amps just for fun & to add to the conversation. I won't disclose which is which till the very end of the vid so you can listen with an open mind & weigh in. What do you think?!?!

Guitar 2, amp 1. I knew exactly what it was when i heard it.

Amp 1 is definitely the most brutal & pissed off of the three, and it is also more naturally scooped.

I really like Guitar 2 a lot, however when recording Guitar 1 just has this magic clarity & bounce.

Amp 2 has the best mids for a mix. I like guitar 1 but only barley.

Guitar 2 sounded like a better sounding guitar, guitar 1 seemed to sit better in the mix.

Alright guys, thank you so much for all the feedback! For those of you who didn't watch the reveal in the last few seconds of the vid, here it is!

Guitar 1 = ESP Lynch w/ JWP Iron Man
Guitar 2 = ESP Hanneman / EMG81

Amp 1 = Mark IIB+ Coliseum
Amp 2 = Mark IIC++ Coliseum
Amp 3 = Mark IVb

In all cases the cab is an older Recto straight traditional 4x12 with the 70w V30s. Signal chain is simply guitar - dry amp - cab - mic.

Any surprises??

The IIB was really
Scooped sounding

I can definitely see the IIB+ being the most raw and brutal in a live mix. The IIC++ has much sweeter mids and sits in a better place recorded. The IV gives the IIC++ a run for it’s money, but I’ll take the IIC by a nose. I definitely dig G2 more and that’s got me a little fucked up, because I’ll take an Ironman over an EMG any day.

I think of that amp (and the other IIBs I've played) as much more balanced sounding, whereas the C+ & MkIII all have this mid hump to their tone that can be good in the mix, or hard to dial out, depending on your perspective.

Of course this can all be mitigated to a degree with moving sliders around on the GEQ, in this case the amps were all set up visually the same to showcase the fundamental differences. If I did it over in hindsight I would've bumped the 750 up a tad on the IIB to bring it a little more forward. That could easily be done in post.

I may gig with the C+ someday just to find out. I'll be packing if I do, though. The IV is very good and with post I bet you could get any of the three almost indistinguishable, but straight amp while the IV is heavy and tighter it'll never be as thick or organic as the IIs.

You have to look at any instrument as the sum of its parts!! ...And when those two Hannys were for sale in Chicago you really should've bought one! :p

A lot of what you address in a few statements above about eq can also be altered in different cabs/speakers. The IIC+/++ feel/bounce coupled the amout of gain makes it a well deserved legend, not to mention the 3D image from the expanded power section. You hear it in person but can it be recorded? Maybe by an exceptional engineer...

Late to the party but I loved the rawness and grunt of Gtr:1 + Amp:1
