I just found a VHT 50st (my favorite amp) used at GC in SC and going to retube it and bias it right away. I'm stck between Mullards, winged Cs, Ruby el34bstr, and JJ kt77s.

I love that el34 growl, but the bigger sounding the better :)

Also, I'll probably go w JJs for preamp or a mix.

I recorded my bands latest cd w an st50 and it killed!

www.myndsight.com is where you can check out the tone!!!!

bump, I think I have it narrowed between the Winged C's, Ruby EL34bstr, and the TS EL34B

In case you guys care lol I ordered TS preamp tubes and a pair of TS EL34B Power amp tubes. I'll let ya'll know how it goes.

Ill join u this lonely thread Keith. ;) Honestly I think most people dont know what they're missing with these heads. To me the CL models are the most tone-full and versatile of the Pittbull line. I could talk about VHT/Fryette products all day long. They're that amazing.

I have a VHT 100CL, and its the best high gain head ever for me! I knew from the minute I played it. After all the amps ive been through and youve been around since the old HC days.. this is the ONE.
Sold my Ultralead's..
Its not JUST how perfect the RED gain channel is..The smooth highs and the tight articulate, clear distortion, its the fact that I can get legit clean to slighty dirty to filthy sounding overdrive. It can nail the 70's rock guitar tone Ive searched for in a high gainer with the channel master up high feeding the poweramp.

Tubes? Mine had all chinese tubes in the preamp and sounded perfect. First amp where i didnt even experiment because i KNEW it wasnt gonna get better than this. The tone but equally importantly, the feel is perfect with these tubes.
I did run two sets of 34's in the poweramp because i liked what happened in the dual class poweramp settings which I believe only runs the outside pair of tubes.

Question for you: Is the CL ST essentially the same amp as the CL but with a dedicated clean?
I have zero issues with the Clean from the Green channel on this head. I set gain lower and the channel higher and the cleans sound great.
A lot of times I'll set it for some break-up and just roll off guitar volume on my PRS's singlecoil settings...perfect clean. Not STERILE clean, but warm and dynamic. Then with the Bridge pickup full on a nice rock tone.
I used to want a clean with a ton of headroom with no breakup and Ive found over time that I don't necessarily even like that sound.. I simply liked the idea of it.
I've got amps that do that tho, and they do it a lot better than my high gainers so you live and learn I guess. The swiss army knife of amps doesn't exist for me but this is as close as it gets.
I have a 2/90/2 as well that I'll run with the head for a destroy type metal tone.
The VHT heads make it easy since they have the Power amp MUTE.
I just run the signal from the FX loop send to the Poweramp input and the speaker connection on the poweramp only.
With the MUTE on the CL head you don't need a dummy load or a separate speaker load hooked up so you get just the preamp, no poweramp straight into the 2/90/2's KT-88 poweramp. It just crushes as you know.

Keith, if you're sticking to 34s, go with the SED =C= bottles. Seriously sick tubes man, seriously.

Let us know how it plays out.

Peace,
Mojo

Funny enough, the one they sent me was the EL84 model. I returned it right away...bastards said it was the EL34 model. Ugh, people are stupid. Back on the hunt for an EL34 VHT now :( Sadly, I'd rather one without the graphic eq.

Decent price and no geq, seller has very low feedback :aww:
So long as it's not metaunstable...

 I have an Ultra Lead with the geq but would not hesitate to buy one without. sounds ungodly good with or without the eq engaged and a good eq in the loop will work great if you want. Fryette loops are KILLER good

I just hate tweaking the graphic eq. I prefer it w/o. Less stuff in the signal chain :)
Btw, just got it for 8 bills shipped

VHTs are designed with particular tubes in mind. Email Steve Fryette and ask him what he recommends. He's awesome at getting back to you.
